Got a friend of mine to agree to let me photograph her, so last Saturday we drove around and shot at a few different locations. Let me know what you think and what I can improve on! :) The EXIF should be intact. Gear used was a 5D, 85mm 1.8, 24-70L, 50mm 2.5 compact macro, 70-200 f/4L and a 580EXII with a RayFlash attached.

    1. Needs major fill or just plain bad lighting.

    2. I like this one, but it needs to be stopped down. You always want the eyes in focus.

    3. You probably need to shoot this one on your chest. Shooting in braod daylight isn't too pleasing unless you're playing high speed sync.

    4. Face needs to be lit a bit more.

    5. Better than 3 and 1, but again the lighting.

    6. Her right eye looks huge for some reason.

    7. Does not look like she belongs there.

You do have a admirable gear collection :h5:

I do like my toys, LOL. Photography is the only hobby of mine that isn't somewhat related to my upcoming Mechanical Engineering degree so a lot of money gets thrown into it because its my only creative release. The only thing borrowed was the RayFlash. It's pricey at $300 but it works so damn well I'll be picking one up if I do more people shoots.

Some of them are overexposed because they printed out underexposed. Gotta get that fixed. :hs:

    1. The RayFlash wasn't turned up enough, and this was at about 4pm, so the sun was coming in DIRECTLY from the side.

    2. I purposely shot that at f/2.5 with the macro so that only her one eye would be in focus. To each his own? :dunno: I'll try the same shot again at a smaller aperture and see if I like it better.

    3. Shoot on my chest meaning lay down and be on the same axis as she is?

    5. I had the RayFlash turned up for some more fill than #1. Almost there.

    6. Perhaps its the shadow that her hair is creating? Would more fill help that?

    7. That was at the end of the day for shits and giggles. Her personality definitely does not fit that area and is sorta why I wanted to shoot there.

    Thanks for the comments! :hsd:

Any other comments regarding poses and lighting are MUCH appreciated as I'm shooting another girl Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday as well.

I'm still grasping the concept of fill flash. :(

Harsh shadows. Fill flash would help out alot especially when shooting with the sun like you did.

As for poses, with this girl she looks better when she just acts natural like in pic #4 as opposed the pics #1 and #7 where she looks forced.

    Thanks for the comments.

Funny thing is she did #1 when she thought I wasn't paying attention and I nabbed the shot anyway. :mamoru: That's her just being goofy. Same with throwing up the peace signs in #7, all her.

It's been tough finding subjects. This girl (Maureen) is one of my better friends so it was a good time for the both of us. I took pictures of my friend Kara I hadn't talked to in a while and all of her poses and expressions look forced or have a deer-in-headlights thing going on.

The girl I'm shooting Saturday is pretty fun loving and attention loving, so I'm hoping she comes into her own when a lens is pointed at her. :wiggle:

    Anyone else?

I suspect my 5D's focus may be off. I was using the center point on all of these and none are quite as sharp as I'd like. :(

:ugh2: Thats a pretty big dick move to berate me and my skills. I harmlessly asked for advice so I can improve. Why not share your expertise and post some tips and constructive criticism? I don't care if you tell me my pictures suck (by OT standards I'm sure they're 1/10's) but at the very least offer an opinion or some actual helpful information.

everything has already been said, and im not going to go into full detail and teach someone composition.

next time leave all the gear at home, learn to use one lens and a flash first.

Bring the 5d, 85 1.8m and a flash. no rayflash (as you can see it does nothing for your photos) and play with it. You brought so much gear with you and dont know how to use it, so why bring it? It will only mess you up.

edit: hell next time bring the 5d and a 85 1.8 without flash and work on composition. flash can really ruin photos when not used correctly.

BTW: Exif is not intact. were you in manual mode??

I'll take your advice and do my shoot on Saturday with just the 5D, 85 1.8, and the 580EXII.

Edit: The EXIF seems to be wiped by Smugmug, dunno why. It's intact in LR and on the exported .jpgs. Whenever I hotlink from my smugmug it dissapears. :dunno:

Would using a ND filter to cut the ambient light and boosting the fill flash helped the lighting of the photos of Maureen on the grass?

yes but i hate puttign things in front of my lens. You should have used high speed sync, and cranked teh shuttter speed way up to kill ambient light. but like i said there is huge difference when using flash in ETTL when in MANUAL mode or AV/TV modes.

In M mode - ETTL tries to use flash to expose the whole image...

In AV/TV mode it goes into a fill flash uses flash only to compensate the foreground...

Learning how to use your camera > equipment...

i think you are getting ahead of yourself in trying to use all that equipment. First work on composition and dealing with ambient light. ie: Lens and camera. Then work on adding flash to the mix. Doing everything all at once, and you will never improve...

FUNDAMENTALS are key in producing great images.
