Just starting out in the photography world. Been reading stuff on here. I messed with them in lightroom and liked how they turned out. Thoughts/suggestions?

I would suggest you to first learn the basics instead of worrying about post processing right now.

the parking meters are my favorite. some tips from a noob

    1) get flickr for the love of god, so you can hotlink them... and link them in 1024x768

    2) stop post processing like a mad man. when i first started i was a processing whore. you quickly learn to process less and compose more

    3) lighten up the images. most of them are way too dark

yeah the parking meters is my favorite one. all I did to it was lower the exposure in lightroom. I was going for that shot, but it came out a little bright and I couldn't tell it was like that from the tiny screen on my canon.

regarding the trash pic, i actually like the post processing more than the original. there's more mystery to the objects that are in the frame, which i tend to find more enjoyable than images that try to capture everything.

i actually don't think your post-processing is all that bad. it's a necessary part of photography and you seem to be exploring a particular style. but like was said before, without some basics in composition your work won't fully transcend simple documentation.

regarding subject matter, i think it's very possible to take an amazing photograph of an ordinary object. in fact, it's probably the most difficult and the most satisfying to accomplish. taking an interesting photo of an exotic/bizzare place/object/person is called 'borrowing power' and often distracts from the actual composition of the image.
