...at Academy this evening. She liked the way the XD fit in her hand best, with Glock and M&P second.

I know there are some XD brolys in the house. Comments on the weapon? I plan to take her over to the indoor range where you can rent different guns to try them out.

(Actually she liked a Bersa .380 best but that's kind of a crappy weapon IIRC, yes? :o )

Did you switch out the grips on the M&P?

Yes, switched to the smallest M&P grips. (She has tiny hands)

The bersa .380 is a perfectly fine weapon. My wife carries one and can dot your eye with it at 15M. Good trade off for size and power if you ask me. She has had hers for 2-3 years now, shoots it a couple times a month and never has any problems with it.

She should go with what she likes best but I'd try really hard to make it a 9mm or larger. The choice of good self defense rounds in .380 is poor. The 9mm guns will be locked breech and not blowback like the bersa and she may well find them easier to shoot on the range.

I think we'll test/rent the XD & Glock at the range to find out what she likes best. :)

Actually I've heard some pretty good things about them, but I don't have any personal experience.

I don't own one, but I have shot a XD a couple times. Nothing mechanically wrong with the gun or how it fit my hand, but i didn't like the trigger it was too long, soft and numb. Could have just been the gun I was using, but even if it wasn't that's a personal preference not a actual problem with the gun.

Getting one SHE likes is going to go a long ways toward her practicing with it and feeling comfortable using it. Getting enough range time to be able to HIT something with the gun she likes is a lot better than having her miss with something she winces or fears shooting with.

I owned a Bersa over 12 years ago. I dropped a mag at the range, it cracked and I had bullets all over my feet. Make sure you don't get one with the crappy plastic bottoms. I CCW'd it for only a year, and the bluing wore off from skin to metal exposure. Other than that, it ran and it didn't have much problems, I wouldn't call it %100 reliable though but it ran most of the time.

If I got her an XD, and she doesn't practice often and this will be a range gun for her, I'd seriously look at the 9mm in the service frame. The 40 in the XD in anything less than the 5" tactical is a bit snappy, even for a plastic gun. If you want the bigger caliber, she's almost better off with the slow rolling recoil of the .45.

I did the same (except making the decision for MY gun). Came to the decision that the XD fit my hand much better and liked the trigger more too. Consequently, I shot the XD more accurately. Didn't care for the feel of the M&P much, even trying the different grip sizes. . My SO hasn't used my pistol other than a few mags worth at my friend's property, but I had her compare my XD to a Glock and she liked the feel of the XD better as well.

perfect first gun imo, strips down instantly and is such a simple yet effective design.

Buy her whatever it is you want in a large caliber, then when she doesn't like it, buy her the bersa, and keep the other one :coold:

The problem with allowing your wife to "choose" based simply on "her experience" is they always get a gun that is small and "cute" or simply because it "fits their hand".

As important as "fitting your hand" is in chosing a handgun, it's not the only thing to consider when choosing an appropriate defensive handgun for your SO.

Don't forget to try out single stack guns like the sig 239 or 1911's too.

She doesn't HATE my 1911 but doesn't think it feels as good as the XD.
