So my mate told me the other day I shouldn't have too much protein shakes as they are bad for the liver in large quantities.
I have a shake with almost every meal.

    Is he talking BS? :squint:

I talked casually one time with a doctor who wasnt an idiot and was more practical and he said that no one should be taking in more than 450 grams of protein a day on a routine basis, he said thats pushin it for the kidneys.

its bad for both the kidney and the liver. The liver is responsible for breaking down protein into hormones and blood plasma etc.

But i wouldnt think dieting on 300g of protein a day will hurt you. But like posted, living on 450g+ for the rest of your life mightnt be the best thing. Im just going of high school biology knowledge here tho.

High protein is fine if you stay well hydrated and have no pre-existing kidney/liver issues.

However, if you are not holding a pro-card or competing at a national level there is no reason to put 450g's + into your body. For your average 180-220lbs gym rat 250g's will suffice.

back in the day when I was bulking and getting about 400-500g of protein a day, my disease flared up for the first time and I had to be in the hospital for a week. They said that protein was in my urine and that that was NOT a good thing. My kidneys were apparently very overworked. So what I'm saying is, too much protein can indeed be a bad thing.

400+g protein a day is crazy. Most of us just get bodyweight.

I don't know why the hell you would think that you need 400-500g's protein a day. People really over-do this protein thing.

At 5' 9" 220lbs and a bench over 400lbs and a squat over 500lbs I have never needed more than 250g's to make gains. Maybe on a heavy bulk day I will hit 300 or so, but to do that regularly is totally uneccesary.

1-1.5 grams protein per lb of lean mass is generally a good range.

:dunno: wasn't really trying to get all that protein, just needed a lot of calories and the shit I chose to eat had a lot of protein.

I'd eat like 3 big meals @ about 100 grams of protein per meal and then get about 200g with shakes + milk.

wow, i guess if i was eating 300 grams of protein i'd skip the shakes. but that doesn't change the fact that saying protein can hurt you is sort of misleading, sure if your intake is at an insane level it may hurt you, the same as how you can drink too much water, too much of anything is bad for you, i doubt the questions people have about protein hurting you aren't aimed at 500 grams per day,,,,,i doubt many around here are taking that level of protein.

    1) Most people would skip the shakes if they were eating that much.

    2) When on a bulk, I only have 1 shake postworkout because my bulk diet allowed me to get in the amount of protein I needed w/out shakes.

    3) 100g's per meal? Your body can only process so much protein at once. Generally, anything over 50g's (other than after a workout) is too much for each meal.

I assume you know all of this by now though.

a guy at my gym asked me how much whey I take at one time. I said two scoops which is about 54 grams. he said "oh, the liver can only process 43 grams at most"

    i went oh :hsugh:
