I have always hated protein shakes, but last week someone recommended I buy Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey protein powder/shakes and it's so delicious. I am drinking probably 5 of them a day now.

I read the protein thread and it mentioned something about too much protein can cause liver problems and whatnot, but then it mentioned differences between whey and animal proteins.

Is drinking too many whey protein shakes dangerous? I don't want to be setting myself up for liver problems and things like that later in life.

I guess one would consider me a pretty unique case. I'm a somewhat overweight (225 lbs) vegetarian who is trying to get in shape in preparation for Marine Corps boot camp :o.

A common preconceived notion is that vegetarians hardly get any protein, but there's like 25g of protein in one veggie hotdog, lol.

As far as how much protein I take in everyday, i'll have to look and will get back to you on that.

Don't turn this thread into a debate, all i'm trying to do is find out if too much protein is dangerous or not.

Too much could be dangerous, but no normal human being eats too much. I am talking 1kg/day for extended periods of time and even then research is unclear.

vegetable proteins usually arent that great. soy protein, while good in and of itself, can promote excess estrogen levels which isnt too good. I think vegi-meat substitutes are usually soy based.
Not trying to be anti vegitarian, hell i went vegan for a while, but ultimately turned back to normal eating due to protein requirements for bulking and such.

    1) Almost anything can be abused... including water

As far as taking to much protein you would have to eat a huge amount for it to be bad for you, your liver, kidneys, etc are very good at removing excess amounts of substances from your body.

As far as boot camp, I dont think they are going to have much vegettrien friendly foods there. When a buddy of mine went through 2 years ago there was a vegetarien in his unit and he was suposedly miserable and finally broke down and ate meat. So, you should probably get your body accustomed to meat again before you leave for boot.
