I'm at about 3/4 a gallon a day, most of which is used for my shake. Someone just told me that all that calcium is wreaking havoc on kidneys. Is this true? How much is too much?

...One side says that a lot of protein is necessary for muscle growth, while the other side says that a lot of protein will lead to osteo and kidney stones. I don't know what to think sometimes. :(

holy crap dude. thats alot of milk. I dont know the answer to your question but what percentage of milk do you take? If you are taking skim milk you should be fine but other wise Id say 3/4 of a gallon a day is alot of milk. I drink 1% and that usually lasts me a week and a half. And yes alot of protein is necessary for muscle growth.

Anywhere from skim to whole. I drink it to supplement food while I'm out and about or at work. I eat regular meals, but for those inbetween times, I drink a lot of milk.

I started doing this in April 2004 and went from 170 to about 195 (bodyfat rose only a couple percentage points).

I think not drinking enough water will cause stones more than anything.

    Thanks, guys.

Too much of anything is bad for you, and I'll eventually cut down on this intake. I'm giving myself seasonal goals. I'm nearing my overall goal of 210 pounds, then I can stop and cut and gain and lose and gain some more. :x:

...And yeah, I've never had constipation before until this last year. Afterwards I definitely understand how a woman must feel after IDB and not enough lube. :sad2:

As a side note can we get people to stop saying TAKING protein, TAKING milk, etc? Jeez...

On topic...kidney stones are linked more to not drinking enough fluids; there's a few types though. Some are calcium stones, some are uric acid, there's a couple others.

ive been drinking that for around 1.5 yrs now.

  14. sure. skim's easy. whole milk, not so much.

  15.

    when it comes to calcium:
    skim milk ~= whole milk ~= 1% milk ~= 2% milk
it's very much mostly just the fat content that varies, especially with all the fortification going on now days.

I agree with what most people said. Soda/too much milk/etc do not soley cause kidney stones. Lack of water does.

As everyone has been saying water is the key.

I'd say keep fiber pretty high aswell, like maybe 40-50g a day.

Fiber is something I feel is overlooked on high protein diets and is probably one of the reasons people feel crappy and get atomic shits and nasty farts.

I like to eat All-Bran cereal, it may only be available in the UK but it's got 27g of fiber per bowl (around 100g net weight) and is only 43g carbs. If I can't meet my fiber needs some days, I use psyllium husk powder to meet it. Of course I eat tons of veggies.
