    I'm currently debating over either

    (Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L OR Sigma 70-200mm f2.8)

    OR

    (Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS OR Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3)

So, one of those. I can't decide if I want to extra reach or the glass speed.

I hear good things about the sigma, but some say it's just not as consistent as Canon L stuff. Plus, the F4 can be found used for pretty damn cheap.

But then there's the Bigma, oh, that range. But then the Canon 100-400 is appealing with the IS.

    Too many choices. Any opinions?

Save up for the 70-200 2.8L and a 1.4TC. You'll save money in the long run unless you buy off the used market.

why no IS? It is because of the extra...extra cost?

Why no IS? I suppose because the F4 L is such a good value. I think I can find one used for under $500, pretty easily.

If the choice were between the F2.8 L and the F4 L IS, I don't know. My instincts would say the 2.8.

I'm hesitant to spend over 1k on a medium telephoto, though. The sigma seems like a cost effective alternative.

So most here think the canon F4 L is still better than the sigma 2.8? I suppose it's quite a value.

I'm currently looking at the same lenses and this is looking to be the best option so far.

These are the some questions that you need to answer first before deciding on a lens.

What is the primary use of this lens going to be?

Do you really need the 400 or 500mm reach?

Do you need faster focusing speed?

Well, what I use it for will depend on which one I buy...

I'll probably just scan the usual sources for used stuff and wait for a good deal.

So you're just buying a lens for the hell of it???

It seems like you're going about it backwards. Most people have an idea of what they want to shoot and look for a lens to fit their needs. You, on the other hand, are going to buy a lens, then find something to shoot.

    Not entirely accurate.

I have two needs, but I only want to buy one lens.

    Funny you post this.

    I just bought a 70-200f4L (craigslist ftw)

AND, i'm going to be picking up a 100-400 f4.5-5.6L next week, if i can find one at the right price.

I spotted the bigma on CL locally, but after some reading it appears that the 100-400L is a better choice for a couple hun more, on both optical quality AND IS feature.

The 100-400 can be had on Ebay for the $1000 mark it appears. But i'm pretty hesitant in buying a lens online. I want to be able to look someone in the eye and ask some questions when i'm buying 2nd hand.

My uses for these beauties are strictly nature/wildlife. Although i'll likely try my hand at some Sports shots once the weather warms up a bit around here..

So... I ended up buying a used canon 2.8 on ebay. It has yet to arrive, but I'll post my impression when it gets here.

The zoom ring is throwing me off, though. It's the opposite from my Tamron. I found myself seeing something I needed 200mm for, rotating the ring and bringing it up to my eye and thinking, "hmm, I thought I would be closer". Then I realize that I'm a dumbass and rotate it the other way. :)

  20. yeah that's like nikon vs canon, dam ass backward nikon, I always do that even though I use nikon alot. I guess because my default is Canon. :dunno:
