I did this job for a guy with massive spyware today. He already had backups so he wanted me to reformat. Fine. I reformatted and reloaded Windows 2000 Pro SP4. I ran Windows update and downloaded all of the critical updates. I installed Firefox, AVG Free Edition, Spy Sweeper trial, & Zone Alarm free edition. I'm not a fan of software firewalls but since he doesn't have a router, its better than nothing for now. I explained how you get spyware and why Firefox is better.

Less than 8 hours later, he called me because Spy Sweeper is detecting CWS and Clearsearch. Of course he denies using IE or downloading anything. Yeah I got paid so I shouldn't care but damn its frustrating to see a pristine computer fucked up before you've even made it home for the night.

Spyware definitely pays the bills lately but its not very rewarding work. If I setup a network, I'm creating something that makes people more productive and hopefully their work easier. If I install a DVD burner and show them how to use it, I'm adding to their computer's capability. If I replace a blown power supply, I'm making them happy that their computer works again just as it did. If I remove spyware, I know they're just going to fuck it up again because they're too stupid to own a computer. Its like spending an hour washing a pig that's going to go roll in mud 5 minutes after you leave.

I do. I install Firefox and explain why its safer than IE. I install Ad Aware, Spybot S&D, and sometimes Spysweeper to clean their computers and leave them there, telling them how to update and scan their computers. I explain what types of web sites are most likely to give them spyware and how their default reaction to free software should be suspicion today. :sigh: It does no good. Some people just shouldn't be allowed on the net.

I never actually thought of it that way, thanks. I guess firebombing spyware HQ's will leave me without a job, or less of it. Thanks again! :bigthumb:
