Got my camera on christmass, never had a camera before let alone an slr or a digital slr...really had literally no idea what anything was or any of the jargon aside from point and click. So for the last few days I've been playing around and reading the manual a bunch and today was my first "test": went into NYC , got some experience...later pics came out alot better than the earlier ones :) Here they are, comments appreciated :

First attempt at a portrait, the lady was crazy and attacked me :wtc: way too overexposed...I figured it out later.

Guy i took portraits of later, he wasn't very photogenic and wouldn't look at me or do anything but one pose + bad lighting = this is the only one I'll show:

Everything was just resized, I don't have photoshop here (on vacation)...nothing even cropped. Any feedback would be appreciated, it was my first time out with a camera and it was fun :) Some people were very mean, most were very nice...cops wouldn't let me photograph them, super dicks and homeless people are kind of scary to talk to sometimes. Other than that it was a lot of fun.

oh, everything was taken in B & W mode, nothing color. I hate how color looks at the moment, maybe its because everything on the east coast is grey right now. Looking forward to springtime in colorado for sure :)

some pretty nice pictures. i like the last portrait of the couple, the crazy guy, and your neice.

just for future reference.. remember you can always remove color from a picutre, but can never add it back.

I used manual focus for a lot of it, but I can't tell when its focused or not in the viewfinder  My eyes apparently cant see :wtc:

camera is a 350d with the kit lens :wtc: ... Might get a 50mm 1.8 soon though just for fun.

yeah I know, I just have no interest in color photography right now. I can't even stand to look at it in the viewfinder, it just looks wierd. I doubt i'll take it out of bw mode for a year+ ...well maybe until springtime and some colors start coming out.

thanks alot, but that is all the stuff that I have so far

Somehow I've never taken a photography class or a film class. I have a fine arts bachelors degree in graphic design with a minor in art history, but I've never paid any attention to photography...I've taken metalsmithing, jewelry classes, sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing..everything but photo. I'm very excited to start this new medium

Right before I took the pictures in the city I somehow wandered upon the photography museum- some really inspiring stuff...I can't remember the exact name of the museum but it had a special che guavera exhibit but what touched me the most was a photography from a poor section of west virginia. Amazing photographs

:) Yeah I don't know, I feel really wierd just walking up to people with a camera in their face. For everyone I took a picture of I approached them and asked if I could take some photographs of them...only a few said no; It was kind of like asking a girl out, when you approach them they are taken back by it and they are like "why is he talking to me" then you sweet talk them and you get their number/the picture :)

For a novice, you certainly do have an eye. I enjoy the last photo of the older couple. Really nice composition.

I was at Barnes & Noble yesterday and, in the periodicals, in the photography section, there is a publication actually entitled B&W. As the name implies, it's all about black & white photography. There were two different issues on the stand too. One was the normal release, the other was their awards issue; where they issue a call for entries, judge them, and give awards. You should definitely check these out. There were some really captivating photos in both of them.

Pointing and shooting is like trying to find gold by picking up handfulls of dirt, sometimes you might discover a nugget, mostly you won't.
But you seem to have the beginings of an eye, develop it.
You can see what could be a subject so work on getting the shot. None of these are.
Look at the work of established photographers who shoot this sort of thing, even if you go out to copy what they do you will be learning.
Imagine if you did'nt have a digital and had to shoot film, learn about and respect those who went before you who's belief in themselves cost way more than a battery charger.

Not sure if you're interested in continuing doing street photography, but I read a great tutorial about it on deviantArt the other day. Here is the link . The system they have doesn't really work well for tutorials, but click download to desktop to read it. Here is the link to all the photography tutorials. As I said before, the tutorial layout really sucks, but if you're willing to put up with it for a few you can find some great articles.

The work looks excellent. I'm also new to photography. Having digital cameras is a great resource to us because there is virtually no financial cost in taking pictures (ie, you don't have to develop film). Take the camera everywhere and shoot all the time. Keep up the good work

thanks for all the comments! Digital photography is amazing, so is regular stuff...I don't look forward to people saying I'm not really doing photographs but just "images" and that its not really photography because its on digital format

I've checked out B & W, and other books in barnes and noble...I go to the library /bookstore at least once a week to read and get inspired for other aspects of my life, now I might have to make it 2 times a week :) I'll have to check out those tutorials too, thanks!

wow, you're ballsy to walk up to people and start taking photos of them....especially in NY. If someone was taking a photo of me, that'd be the end of their hobby.

    very nice photos btw.

A lot better than I was expecting when I opened this thread. You have some very good work, and a pretty damn good eye. Keep up the good work, I'd love to see more of it. And with this whole series, I don't really mind the black and white. It looks great with it. Just as you said with the east coast being grey right now. It shows a lot of emotion without the color.

The only pic I really have a complaint about would probably be your first one that you posted. It looks really out of focus and really like you just snapped it while driving/riding by.

I took the first pic from inside a train at like 40 miles an hour!!! :)

Thanks for all the compliments guys, like I said I asked everyone if I could take their pictures...I lied alot to say what it was for (like class or something) just to get people to trust me, but I'm very personable and likeable guy- not threatening in any way. I did shy away from asking some people because they were very intimidating (mainly this large group of black guys all yelling at eachother :o , and a guy in a suit smoking a cigar who looked like donald trump and didn't have time for anything). I really want to go into stores and take picures of people shopping, we'll see how that goes.
