Went with Nun to go check out this place about 7 minutes away, that I never even knew of till like last week. Turns out it's been open for about a year.

Goddamn I got served like a little bitch.

    Some girl tapped me....:wtc:

50 bucks a month isn't that bad? :dunno:

With a little work I think I'll get the hang of it.

I have no idea what how to get out of the guard, any suggestions?

Actually, I was taught to put my knee under the butt and push down on their knees with my elbows while pushing down on the stomach. I think it's called a "basic"

    Any other way?

  3. $50 is cheap. I suck at passing guard too. :o

Today was my first day, so I asked the instructor what I should do to try and pass gaurd.

He said "Just do whatever is natural, it's too much teaching right now".

I don't think he wanted to tell me because the first class was free, so probably once I start paying I'll get more knowledge :dunno:

But a lot of the people there were really helpful, pretty

Nun got the girl in an armbar.

  5. Yeah I do have some guard passes but it's really hard to teach since it involves a lot of baiting

I've been training a female friend for a week. She's not bad and now wants to compete :)

The closest one is about 3 hours away. :o

But they are building one in orlando, I don't think it's open yet, that's about one hour away.

I like this place though, it's small and inexpensive, and I can learn alot.

there are lots of other gyms around though, that's just a bigger named one of course

i think it's Ralph Gracie's gym. besides Renzo, i don't like any of the gracies, but i'd definitely want to learn from one if i could

For now focus on keeping a good base, good posture and keeping either both arms in or out.

don't worry about where you train as long as your partners know what they are doing. 50 bucks a month is awesome.

Something you should keep in mind is that they won't teach you how to grapple but they will teach you all of the moves (or at least they should). Learning the set-ups, and timing is all you and that is what takes so much time.

As for the basic guard pass, you are not putting your knee under their butt but rather between their butt and you. the point of that is to create distance between you and the person and prying his legs open. If their butt/body is laying on top of your knee/thigh then you are doing something wrong (many new people in my club make this mistake).

:werd: try grabbing the waistband of their pants and pinning the hips to the floor to make this tech work better.

yeah in no gi, pushing their stomach is a great way to make sure their body/butt doesn't come on top of your leg. Push it down to the mat as hard as you can w/ both arms and get the knee in.
