In about half an hour I'm going to my first Krav Maga class. Some days of the week have different emphasis, and today's is grappling, so I'll be in my element for at least my first lesson, more or less.

I was wary at first, but I've watched them spar and they don't seem to pussyfoot too much, so I figured I'd change things up a bit and try something new for the next month or so.

    Anybody here into Krav Maga?

Im in to Kenpo, and a lot of what i have seen in Krav Maga can be traced back to the techniques in Kenpo.

One thing that makes me a little skeptical of the Krav Maga i have seen is when i comes to gun defenses. I am interested to hear your side of it as you get more in to it.

Sorry if this post is non-sensical. I am tired as fuck and its almost 4 am here.

I loved Krav Maga. Wish I still had the moneys to train.

Though what you describe sounds slightly different than what I did. My school had sparring (with all techniques allowed, including groin attacks) but only once a week. The other days we trained did more bag and pad work, as well as specific defenses for common street attacks like chokes, bear hugs etc.

I never got past the first "level" though. They don't teach grappling till level 2 or so, gun defense are in level 3.

i think judas (formerly clean97gti) does as well.

sadly, my school seems to be slowly becoming mcdojofied and i'm getting pissed.

you guys are in FL right?

if you ever want, come by and check out my school

I'm pretty sure you will find it more to your liking. The owner (he's like a father to me) was a ATF cop for 26 years and was first through the door on many raids and what not. What we teach works. No forms, no bullshit.

I was kinda dissapointed, but I should have known better than to expect a serious level of grappling. They just haven't been doing it for very long, or ever near to the level of intensity I'm used to.

From now on, I'm sticking to striking. They keep telling me that they really go at it when they spar, and bloody noses and fat lips aren't rare, so there's hope yet.

we train at my school with the idea that we control our shots to the groin so as to not maim our training partners. With that in mind, no one is ever perfect and accidents happen, which is why we recommend our student wear groin protectors. I've popped a few times, and even while wearing one it put me on the mat for a few minutes.

from what i've seen, KM's ground game is more to get the fuck out of there than to beat anyone's ass on the floor. at least, at my shitty school.

That's quite understandable, but a big part of effective grappling is live rolling, at high intensity, against a fully resisting partner, even if all you are doing is positional work and escapes.

Tonight is a striking class, and they promised sparring, so I've got my hopes up.

Alright, the good news is, we actually spar. And since I have next to no standup experience, it was pretty cool to put the little skill I do have to work. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Theres an exensive warm-up in the sparring class, and right at the end my back cramped up pretty bad (it's happened before and it isn't pretty). I got so sick of watching everybody spar while I was sitting on the side stretching that I went ahead and sparred anyway, and that was pretty stupid. I couldn't really move the next day.

The class was very sharply divided between those that knew what they were doing and those that didn't. I was probably around the middle skill-wise, which is pretty bad considering how little experience with standup I have. The thing that really struck me was how far a bit of aggression and muscle could get me.

As things are, my back is almost better, and I'm gonna go back in soon. Hopefully I'll be a fast learner with striking. I'll keep updates coming.
