Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on the importance of straps when it comes to lifting.

I can think of a couple of exercises where straps would help me out immediately.... dead lifts, pull downs, and shrugs.

Obviously using straps will reduce the amount of grip strength needed for your lift but I feel like some days if I was just able to hold ON to the damn weight for longer I'd definitely get some more reps out.

(I dont use gloves or chalk either, if that's relevant)

    Speak on it F+N

Personally, I probably don't need it until I start lifting over 500 lbs. I can lift 455 lbs. without it pretty well...

Don't wear straps. At your current level if you can't hold on to the weight it should be easy to build up the strength to get it.

Chalk makes all the difference in the world. I can't pull 405 without my sweaty hands getting in the way... with chalk I've pulled 535.

Agreed. If you cant hold/grip it...then work on your grip strength.

The only time i've used straps would be for rack pulls

i strap all the time, always have, i can still hold 585 deads for as long as i need to. however i do only strap on heavy last sets that tend to hit biceps alot. I would rather do 10-12 reps without grip failing and only getting 7-8. Then again im in the business of building muscle, not caring about grip or weights.

I agree with you completely. But needing straps to pull 135lbs is just... meh. :hsugh:

I can barely do 225 for reps without chalk. Adding it, I can DL almost twice that.

if your just starting to lift, dont use straps. after you've been lifting a while, use straps.

I use straps for shrugs, standing calf raises, bar bell rows, etc. I don't use them on dead lifts though. I use baby powder on my hands for alot of lifts, I doubt it helps as much as the guys using chalk says it does but it keeps the rough hands to a minimum.

 baby powder is doing the exact opposite of chalk. People put it on the thighs to decrease friction and slide the bar up. Baby powder reduces friction, chalk increases it.

and who fucking cares about straps. unless you are competing in a sport where you can't wear them, strap up. If your grip is holding you back from moving more weight, strap up and use the weight.

It keeps my hands from getting all blistery and cut up. I didn't say it was increasing my strength or anything ...

Grip fails towards the end of the 2nd set if I go heavy.
