Has the d40 body let you down any? I'm a big fan (thought I shoot Canon) of Nikon's 24-70 f/2.8 and 17-55 f/2.8 VR for a nice zoom lens. Looking at your pictures though, a 70-200 f/2.8 VR would be a nice addition, though maybe a little pricey.

D80 will open you up to a whole lot more variety of lenses.

What are your reasons for wanting to upgrade bodies? Is there something that the D80 has that you go "damn I wish I had that right now" instead of your cam? The thing with the D40 is that you're gonna have to get lenses with AF motors built into them so they're gonna be more expensive. Nikon 24-70 2.8 FTW :mamoru: What price range are you looking at for a lens...and what focal length, depends on what you shoot.

basically for the fact that the d80 has inbody focusing which would have a quicker autofocus over in lens af for the d40?
would depend on what in lens af though too but the cost would be high

I'd prolly buy a decent lens that will work with your current body AND you would want to keep and continue using when you get a new body.

I wouldn't get the d80, as the only advantage is the motor drive. You might as well wait until you can afford something that will give you the motor drive AND better image quality/higher iso, etc.

I think the lowest model that would make sense for you to upgrade to is the d90.

Generally, I would go with a new lens, but this time around I'd opt for the D80 b/c of:
    1. The use of AF lenses.
    2. D80 has wireless CLS.

There's other differences, but I think these 2 are the most important.

like i said i mainly like shooting auto racing so i would need a lens with a decent zoom

most of what i have taken has been at like 150mm

    was looking at this lens
    http://www.adorama.com/NK70300AFVRU.html
    af w/ vr

    or possibly this lens

also is in lens af better then in body? i was under the assumption that inbody is better but im probably wrong

oh and btw any c&c would greatly be appreciated

The 180 2.8 is TACK sharp...my friend owned one and I always used to borrow it when we went shooting. The 70-300 VR I heard is good but obv. it's not like the 70-200 2.8. I would look at the 80-200 2.8 as an option also. You have a range so you're not stuck at 180 and it's faster than the 70-300, the only drawback is no VR but it's half the price:

I borrowed it from my school about a month ago when I shot a wedding...it was on my camera more than half the time.

He can't use that lens in the link b/c the D40 doesn't have an AF motor in the body. He can try and look for a used 80-200 AF-S version, but they're harder to find and usually a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. :o

 You're right...I guess upgrade body then, cause having to sift through lenses every time must be a bitch. I would go with the D90
