I was just asked by a co-worker if I would some shots of his 3 month old...

how do you handle kids? can I take my dog's squeeky toy to keep him entertained and focused where I want to shoot? I've never done babies before :noes:

When I shot that 3 month year old a few weeks ago I had his mom wiping drool between every few shots. and his grandma behind me waving toys in the air to get him to look at me.

it's definitely more than a 1 person job.

yeah, let their parents do everything. the kid is used to them, not some goon jamming a bigass lens in their face.

Totally depends on the baby, but its possible that a 3mo old will like you just fine. Biggest thing I find with my baby is not to have to many people trying to get her attention.

I also find its best if the photog (even when we take her to a studio) handles getting her attention. Since thats gonna be you, you'll understand why as you try to take the pic and the kid is looking off to the left at mommy jumping around and rattling while dad is behind you doing the same. You'll miss lots of good shots and the kid will get bored in a few minutes and start crying or move on to something else.

Bottom line, you try to get attention first then get help.

A good technique is to touch the baby on the nose with something neat like a flower or soft toy while making a noise or something. Then draw the object back towards the camera fast enough to keep attention. Thats what all the places we've went do and it seems to work.

When its me I usually hold a lens cap in my hand and tap it with a finger nail and put it in the direction I want her to look. Works very well on my daughter.

reminds me of when i was a kid, i'd go to the eye doctor and he would hold a sucker / lollipop in his his and crunch the wrapper in his hand where he wanted me to look.

damn eyes are tearing up just thinking about it

bonus is giving the kid the candy (if parents allow)

you have to remember kids don't do much at 3 months. If they look at you, snap away and take lots of pics! simple as that. Most times their eyes will be wondering and looking at random things...

Here's one of Kami's very few pics that I have of him looking at me in his 3rd month. wife had him over her shoulder trying to burp him after feeding, took the opportunity and snapped away.

don't take a dog toy. just ask the parent to bring one of the kid's toys/whatever in case you need to get their attention

bumbo seat ftmfw. we used that thing several times for pictures of my boy. in others we threw a blanket over it or whatever but eventually his legs got too fat to fit a blanket and them in the seat.

here's one of him chillin for a 4 month shot. they don't always have to be looking at the camera. i think he was looking at mom here.
