Finally got fed up with not having a light on my AR15 so I made my own flashlight mount from some old 1913 rail from an old airsoft gun (who says airsoft isn't useful:mamoru:)

Heres the results (need to paint the rails, they look like shit):

Flashlight is a Surefire Z2 with 120 Lumen lamp. Next up is a tape switch.

I got tired of all that shit on my AR and took it off. Literally nothing but a LaRue BUIS.

My AR is pretty un-ricified really. I dont have a million things on it like most AR owners.

If you run out of ammo you could beat someone with that flashlight

I'm not sure that a flashlight is "all that shit" if its a home defense type gun :big grin:

Looks like a good economical solution!

I'm talking about the choice of weapon, ie discharging an AR15 in self defense in an apartment complex vs. in the woods where you won't perforate any neighbors. Nothing wrong with having a light. My light is on my G19

Oh the old overpenetration myth. I just recorded the sound of a shotgun racking and use that for home defense. You don't even have to aim.

Every time your door opens it presses the play button on the tape player. Now you don't even have to get out of bed!

Where I live im not too worried about it. I don't have neighbors on 3 sides of my apartment and this is the only gun I own besides a 10/22 and therefore the only gun I have for home defense. The Z2 is great for HD, at 120 lumens it lights my whole front room up. Plus if I take my rifle night shooting, it will light up much more than my E2 defender will.

BTW, the mount is rock solid on the front sight post with zero play.

But imagine an ND. You run the risk of the brown noise setting you off every time you get up to go the bathroom and forget about your booby trap.

I also realized that if im going to use the AR for home defense, it was imperative that I have a light for positive ID. Originally I thought I could just grab my E2D off the night stand and use it freehand, but in a stressful situation, that probably wouldn't play out the way iI planned. This way its a dedicated weapon light, and its in the perfect spot for my thumb to press on the momentary switch comfortably.

Yeah, I could have picked one up for ~$30 at Cabela's, but then I wouldnt have put my dremel to as much use. That thing is the BEST tool for DIYers.

Also, that Hakko 4x30 doesnt stay on there all the time. When it goes next to my bed its irons only. I have also been tossing around the idea of getting an Aimpoint CompM3, or spending twice the $$ and going for the ACOG (TA01) :dunno:

Bullet Tooth Tony: Boris the Blade? As in Boris the Bullet-Dodger?
Avi: Why do they call him the Bullet-Dodger?
Bullet Tooth Tony: 'Cause he dodges bullets, Avi.

I adjusted it after taking those pics. Since there is only one bolt, its easy for it to become slightly canted if the bolt isnt tight. Plus its a free flashlight mount, who cares if its a little crooked. Im not mounting any super duper lazersss on there.

Oh so it's definitely a good idea to use an AR as a primary defensive weapon in a crowded area with thousands of people within range of a ricochet. I stand corrected.
