Went to Golds yesterday, and they quoted me $40 a month, no startup cost and no contract. Sounds OK, but then a friend of mine told me he is paying $25 a month and negotiated it.

What are some tips for negotiating?

I paid only $25 a month when I went there, but I paid a start up cost.

well gold's gyms are not as 'corporate' as like LA fitness right? like, there are tons of gold's gyms...just with individual owners. almost like a franchise? i think you would have more room to negotiate a price.

    correct me if i'm wrong

If you don't have to pay startup costs and they are charging you $40 a month it's not that bad of a deal.

Get up and start ending the conversation :wiggle: I've done that several times. The salespeople don't want to let you out without a sale, they WILL negotiate.

When i applied the quote was 60$/month and around 100$ startup fee. The owner was russian, so i pretty much said i was russian straight out, and they waved the startup fee and gave me a discount. I guess they do have room to play with the prices.

Tell them you have access to a free gym (university or such) and will work out there if they wont negotiate a price. Then make comparisons how they have similar equipment and such and that the hours are basically the same (or close). Then get the final price in writing.

don't be afraid to walk out if they don't offer anything better. I did that when I was about ready to sign up and they dropped it $4 per payment, so 8 bucks less a month was ok by me, and they also waived the $50 set up fee.

I walked out yesterday when I dropped in. Hopefully he got the point. I did tell him that I was working out for free at my apartment complex (has nice setup, dumbbells, barbells, Precor circuit)..

I'll go in there again and ask him about meeting the $25
