are they just replacing the timing belt, or does that include water pump, thermostat, etc.? It's a SOHC 4-cylinder engine, so any shop should be able to change the belt REALLY quick....I would get a few more opinions first before paying that, but then again I do all the labor on my car so I really have no concept of how much it runs...

timing chains = not cheap. just do it and make sure they do your water pump.

is this from the VW dealer? Sounds like a good price to me. Newer VW's can have some expensive repair bills :hs:

It's not a timing chain. Timing chains are expensive, yes, but I don't think I've ever seen an engine that had a chain needing replacement.

My car is a Mk4. It has a timing belt. It's the VR6's that have timing chains.

your car is a b5 passat. mk4s are only volkswagen and jetta. they run off the a4 platform, once again, yours runs off a b5. the only similarity between your car and his is the VW badge.
