It's time for me to upgrade from my Sony Vaio desktop. I'm a noob at building computers, but thought the best way to learn something is to just do it. I was thinking of upgrading this computer, but honestly, I know I can build a great computer for cheap, so decided to do so. I'll mainly be using ubuntu as I'm slowly transitioning away from windows. I'll have a copy of windows on the new rig, but just for some things like photoshop, visual studio, etc...

I assume newegg is a good start, but what exactly will I need?

    case
    motherboard
    ram
    sound/graphics cards
    hard drive (what size?)
    what kind of cd-rom/dvd-rom?
    cpu.. what kind of processor?

Anything else am I missing or should I add?

I'm looking forward to building this :)

pick anything between the first one and this budget build,... you'd be solid

:eek3: on the first one... $3,400 ... What are the items that wouldn't matter when mixing and matching? I know I don't care much about gaming so a good graphics card and monitor don't matter much to me...

Say if I could choose to upgrade a couple items from the budget build to the first list of options, what would you recommend?

the cpu, mobo, and ram would not be compatible between those two lists
    they have different cpu/mobo sockets.
ram on 1st one is DDR3, the budget build uses DDR2.

i guess you want a budget build.
just upgrade accordingly (e.g. you want a quad core instead of that E7400)
