How many flashes do you have? I just got a 430EX, my first flash ever. I think I'm going to practice with it until I understand its use a little better before I try to operate more than one. Plus, I still have some glass I'm looking to buy first. Why does photography have to be so expensive?

I just have a 550ex, I hope all of this works well with it :hs:

although going off camera there is no real reason to spend that much on a flash, if I get more then 1 I'll just pick up some cheapie sunpaks :o

and yeah I would get better glass first too, I bought all of this stuff because I finally have all of the lenses I really need

i dont think only 1 flash will work. its just not bright enought to overpower ambient light

I'll still be able to learn with it, and once I get the initial stuff adding more light is pretty easy :hs:

    .

not using a diffuser can also keep the light intensity more concentrated, also

I use an old 420EX as a slave and it does the job. They can be found for ~ $80 used.

I like nikon flashes for off-camera use. I have a couple sb-28s that I use, around the same power and price as the vivitar or sunpak but some nicer features.

using a flash isnt all about overpowering ambient light. simply filling in shadows is better than nothing

strobist is the art of using off camera flash...

here is a picture i found on FM where the photographer (not me) used a single strobe and a softbox and placed it high camera left.

as you notice there is no overpowering of the sun, and infact the ambient green from the foliage is left intact.

i'm not trying to start an argument, i was just giving my perspective.

strobist is about using speedlights and small, cheap portable flashes...

not really about overpowering ambient, or just about being of camera

it's very easy to overpower ambient if you have no ambient :mamoru:
