Looks like my system is toasted. Spontaneously locks up. HARD lock too. Switched back to old OEM ram hoping it would be fixed by that and no luck.
ran fsck from single user mode, booted to CD ran disk utility to repair disk and permissions, no dice.
    Thing still locks hard.

eek. I can speak to experience using Apple's Backup... when I left college to go home for the summer I used Backup to save preferences, safari settings, my address book and all my e-mail to my iPod. Got home, created a new user on the home machine with the same shortname, and did a restore from the "at college" image, worked absolutely flawlessly. Came back here less than a week ago, dumped the "at home" Backup image back on to this hard drive, came up without a hitch. I love it :)

if you try the same method just make sure your pathnames to all the files you restore are the same, as is your username... I didn't have any problems but my pathnames were identical. That's not to say there would be problems if they were different, but I'd rather not find that out.

    make it easy on yourself...

boot up in target disk mode
    copy your user folder
    install machine
    place folder back.

I just actually did that. machine works fine now.

Try running cocktail before you nuke it, Tell it to do everything include redoing the prebinding, clearing logs, permissions, everything. Just go to the pilot section

    http://www.macosxcocktail.com/

You should be able to use it for free. PM me if you need to "purchase" it.
