So, I decided to start looking at AR's, opposed to SKS/AK's. I'm not in a huge hurry so I am going to buy things a little at a time in hopes of having a complete rifle by the summer. I have a build list in mind but wanted to run it past some more experienced black rifle guys to make sure it's an okay build.

Uses for this rifle are basic. I would shoot some outdoor 100 yard ranges initially, just some plinking stuff. I have a G26 and shotgun, but this could possibly perform some HD duty too if needed. I'm not looking for the baddest, most accurate rifle out there. I'm looking to build one to learn the process, say I "built" my own gun and have fun shooting with some friends. Down the road I'm sure, like everything else I do, I'll get one decked out and blow 3 grand on something. But for right now, a decent shooter for $750ish is the goal.

Lower, I've narrowed it down to Spikes, Mega or AGP Arms. ~$90
My friend has a lower parts kit, RRA I think. $40
    Stock-MAGPUL MOE Carbine-FDE or OD Green- $40
Upper-Either find one used or look at Del-Ton, Roggio or CMT 16" flat top. $400-$500
Magpul PMAGs in FDE or OD.
Cheap quad rail with FDE rail covers.

Anyone see anything drastically wrong with this first time rifle build? As I was enlightened with the TAPCO=Crap in the other thread, anything you see that I should absolutely stay away from?

    Thanks for any advice.

Lower doesn't matter unless you are looking for fancy billet, so that's fine.
You're lower does need buffer/tube/spring/etc. So just get a moe for $100 with everything http://www.dsgarms.com/index.cfm/product/2609/magpul-moe-kit---black.cfm The moe grip will be better than the stock rra anyway.

I'd probably go one notch up from upper choices and get a Daniel Defense or LMT. There's really not a lot of difference in price. I'd get a simple carbine upper and slap the moe foregrip on there.

Also make sure you've got a bolt carrier group in your estimates. I'm partial to overpriced chrome Young mfg, but on a budget I'd get a LMT

    Also don't forget irons

I would stay away from those uppers you listed.

If you're firm in your budget, try to find one of those complete Daniel Defense uppers for $500. They may be gone tho as they were quickly snatched up.

If you can find that, I would got with a complete CMMG upper, also around $500.

If you're willing to spend a little more, you can get a BCM or LMT upper.

+1 to the suggestions above. DD and CMMG are good uppers.

DSA makes fairly decent uppers but you'll need a BCG too. LMTs BCGS are nice and competitively priced.

It's a 1/9 twist but that should get you by for 90% of the ammunition choices. Especially if you're just looking to shoot at 100 yards or so. Although it's not chrome lined, it is Nitride treated so it's a lot harder than standard steel.

Personally I'd skip the quad rail and spend the money on ammo to shoot. Anything practical like a light or sling can be attached without a quad rail. Unless you're using night vision/IR lasers, you probably don't need a quad rail. Without paying a couple hundred dollars for a quad rail, you're also going to end up with a heavier rifle overall (the expensive DD rails are just as light as the plastic handguards.)

Oh, I know about it, but I have to plan this out to try not to piss the wife off too bad. I've bought a Glock 26 and a Mossberg 500 in the last 4 weeks. Another month we're buying a boat and a new truck to pull it. That's why pieces coming in look better than showing off my brand new gun to her. :noes:

Thanks for some of the heads up guys. If I can get one of my bikes sold, I'm just going to bite the bullet and put something together now with some of the deals I'm finding.

    Thanks for all the info.

Keep the rifle basic starting out. Put some rounds through it and then decide if you want or need to add rails, grips, anti rotation pins, bayonets, lasers, radar, and so forth. Avoid looking at ego builds on the internet where people list all the hip expensive bullshit they hung on their rifle. Save the money and make sure the critical parts are the best quality you can afford.

And buy a milspec receiver extension.

I'd get a BCM BCG long before I got an LMT.

Seriously though, there is NO better deal for a first AR (for general farting around/plinking) than the CMMG bargain bin. For $600 bucks you have a complete gun of good quality. You can use the dough you saved on ammo and spend some time at the range
