So everyones tolerance of pain is different. Mine happens to be not so high. My first tattoo only took about an hour and a half and I could sit through that, I didn't eat before and wasn't well rested, and I believe if it had gone another 20 minutes I would have passed out.

So, being that my next is going to be considerably larger, and eventually a sleeve, what would happen if I were to pass out for those short few seconds and what can I do to prevent that lol, or stall the process:hs:

    Few things:

    a) bring 2 big drinks with sugar in em with you. I usually fill a big water bottle with gatorade, and also bring a 32oz snapple or something
    b) eat a solid meal beforehand, durr
    c) bring snacks like chocolate bars, M&Ms, etc to munch on during it
    d) watch your breathing. Try to time your "out" breath for when the needle touches the skin everytime your artist leans in to draw
    e) Bring music. Close your eyes and zone out.
    f) Try to take as little breaks as possible. The pain is easier to tolerate if you keep it consistent, your body gets more and more used to it and you can tune it out. For me at least, it always hurts more after i break and sit down again, take me another 15-20 minutes again to get back into zone out mode.
    g) you know you're going to pass out because you'll start sweating profusely, feeling nauseous, hearing might get a little blocked - so don't worry about just bonking out mid session, your body will give you advanced warning. In that case just ask the guy to stop. take a break, go outside, deep breaths, get sugar in you, relax.

I usually sweat a little during the first 15 minutes or so while i get used to the feeling of tattoing again, and then it goes away

    hope that helps :hs:

    Thanks :h5:

I'm hoping that tattooing is a pain I can tolerate and that it was poor preperation, because even though i felt like I was goning to be done if it had lasted another 20 minutes, the overall pain was bareable, never was I feeling like I couldnt take the pain, in my mind anyway, maybe my body felt differently. Now that I think about it, breathing was defintely a problem, the guy had a fish in a small tank that was just looking at me the entire time, so I was kind of having a staring contest with it  may have held my breath for a few seconds at a time without noticing. Not to mention he was blasting Slayer in my face

Yeah man, definitely bring music, joy division suggested that to me and it helped a ton.

Also for more painful spots, figure out a way to help deal with it. I usually put my hand over my face with my thumb on one cheekbone/temple and index+middle finger on the other and just kind of squeeze my hand and shut my eyes hard...or sometimes i'll pinch my arm as the needle is going to distract myself. The best is just getting your body totally relaxed and breathing calmly while it's really painful - once you can do that you'll start upping your threshold.

yeah i posted about it in another thead, but basically the way i've been able to raise tattoo pain tolerance is

    - relax EVERY part in the body while it hurts
    - start to breathe deeply and slowly on a rhythm, still while it hurts
    - think over and over "there's nothing i can do that will make this hurt less"

    it works :dunno:

+1 for the controlled breathing, my tattoo isnt that big, but i definately didnt know what to expect...

i really only had the floor/wall to look at, so it was control my breathing, try to relax (as my tattooist kept telling me lol)

i also tend to clench my jaw if im anxious, but then my jaw started to hurt, so i ended up laying there biting my hand to focus the pain elsewhere
i had teeth indents till the end of the day, and later realised the pain wasnt so bad and that i wanted more of it, even though i'd said i would only ever get the one tattoo :wiggle:

My tummy was so sore after doing my side piece. I couldn't help but flex it. I found counting things in the room helped with more painful parts :dunno:

I could get tattooed for days. The pain doesn't both me. Unfortuantely my skin pretty much goes to crap after three hours.

? It's pointless to keep drilling on me after 3 hours. My skin won't handle it. My pain tolerance will, just not my skin.

:rofl: Well my thread about my sleeve failed and nobody replied lol. But basically, I want to get a ghostship from armpit to elbow with main emphasis on the boat itself, not the sails or anything. Black and white, with some bright blue in parts of the water. For elbow to wrist I wanted to get a b&w octopus with parts of it a bright orange, but I don't know about that part anymore, don't want it to seem like a kraken tattoo. Gotta find another animal or something :hs: Is that non gay enough?

waht he means is that sometimes people's skin won't take the pigment after awhile. It doesn't happen often but it's usually when someones getting a larger piece done and they try to line, shade and possibly color as much as possible in one sitting. Your body basically just begins to reject it.
