so, I finally completed a project I've been working on on and off for the past month or so -> http://www.winmystuff.org

There's a lot of PHP code running the backend of things - basically the site encrypts the users IP address, stores it in a database for tracking and assigns a referral ID to the user. Every time the user refers someone else who has never been to the site before, they gain 1 point towards an entry into the current contest. Once they have enough points for at least one entry, an AJAX enabled form is displayed for them to enter their contact details. All further contest entries they gain automatically are credited to their account.

The whole concept relies on ad support, of course. Whether or not it will be successful, I have no idea.

It hasn't been approved for adsense yet, so I just have a couple buy.com affiliate banners on there temporarily..

Won't work. Most people have dynamic IPs via DHCP. DSL users especially.. once their IP changes, they will lose all their credits.

    Fail.

I've had the same IP address for many months, but im on cable. The IP address only has to stay the same until you get 10 points to get an entry form, then it's all automatic. I will be adding cookie checking and an optional signup form right off the bat pretty soon to take care of anyone who's IP does change very often, but a lot of people's IP should remain the same long enough for it to work.

You can't rely on "should" or people will be complaining. The fact is, cable IP leases last a good amount of time, but if your power goes out for longer than an hour, you will likely have a new one by the time you reconnect. DSL, every time you reconnect you will get a new IP.

    Not negative, just realistic.

My upload site works by IP for the "my images" option, but you can also create an account, and log in. Once you log in, it merges all your IP-based uploads to your account-based uploads.

I'm just saying, pretend I'm a comp noob, I get 9 clicks, and then my power goes out.. I then goto your site, get a new link, and never see the form, yet know I've sent 10 people the link. Why should I continue to feed people to your site, when it clearly has failed me?

Dude here is a site I did alot of work for (mainly the SMS backend) http://www.winningbid.com.au/ I know how this auction style shit works and I also know the ad revenues a site like that could make. Thing is referal links scream scam to alot of people and I dont think the site dispells the scam thoughts.

:ugh: I don't think it's even possible to fail any harder than you do, you actually expect people to donate $1 million to your shitty wordpress blog.

Aside from dynamic IPs, a lot of ISPs use proxy ranges which means that many users have the same IP (the biggest ISP in the UK does this).

Also, how do you know where to send the PS3?

once the user has earned enough points for an entry, they are presented with an entry form to fill in their contact details.
As for the IP problems, I'm working on some fixes now, and also changing the design to accommodate extra content such as a blog and other features.

yep, this site looks like a spammy/scam site. i dont think a lot of people will sign up thinking theyll actually win because of it. also at least put up a thing that explains how its going to work instead of just giving them links to send/spam their friends with.
