Now that my 70-200 is on a Fx body I sort of miss the crop for getting out there (zoom level).

So I was thinking of getting the 2.0 teleconverter for it. Thoughts?

My friend who shoots canon said to stay away from the 2.0 (or at least from canon because it is hella soft) but said the 1.4 is fine.

Is this true for Nikon too?

Get the 1.7x, skip the 2x.

I've used the nikon 2x on my 80-200 af-s. it is awful at f/5.6, decent at 6.3 or 7.1 though.

its relatively sharp wide open @ f/4 with the 1.4x though.

you'd be better off picking up a 300/4 if you can afford it.

I wouldn't waste your money on the tubes, unless the degradation of the image quality is worth the trade for the extra reach. Here's a direct comparison of toobz vs no toobz... The bottom pic is without extenders, the previous three are with the extenders, same lens. Notice the difference?

I've use the 1.7 and 1.4 and they are both very good. I'd stick with the 1.7 if you want the reach, the 2.0s can be soft. I hated the 1.4 and 2.0 when I shot Canon, at least with Nikon I find the 1.4 and 1.7 very usable.

This is the same lens, one with the 1.4x extender, and the other without. lens is the same in both photos. Notice how the first one is soft, and the vintage ride is damn near tack sharp. This is the Canon gear though...
