docked over in the miami beach coast guard station.

What the hell is it. Says its a fast boat, but what does it carry, what does it do. Thing is fucking broly as fuck, I got a pretty close look at it.

its the HSV swift. Its like a miniture sea base capable of supporting all kinds of missions. It uses a catarmaran design allows it to travel at higher speeds and I believe it also helps minimize its wake.

I thought I saw it moored back in 2002 at PACFLT San Diego when I was stationed on the USCGC Hamilton. I suppose it was a different Navy catamaran though since the Swift is stated to have been launched in late 2003. :dunno:

Scratch that, I thought Jervis Bay became a HSV in US service after the RAN gave it back to the owners, turns out it was actually sold to someone called SpeedFerries and currently operating as HSC SpeedOne doing a Dover - Boulogne-sur-Mer run.

HSV-1 actually used to be the Devil Cat apparently doing the Melbourne - Tassie run. If so I've actually been a passenger. Bit wierd.

That's the kind of innovative stuff that the navy isn't exploring to the max of their ability.

    Turbo-

Not sure the USN knows numbers starting with m rather than b exist. See the new CGN proposal... nuclear power, DDG 1000 evolution.

Meant to come in around the 5 billion mark. Of course Congressional Budget Office puts the 'basic' DDG at somewhere between 5 and 7 billion.

Now, give one to each carrier group, 11 carriers, factor in you probably need another training and another in maintenance.... pretty soon you're talking serious bikkies, even in US terms.

Got a bit distracted; original point of the post:

You ought to take a look at the Austal site and have a peek at some of their concepts. Cool stuff, they were pushing this stuff well before they got picked for one of the LCS designs.

Have I really been that obvious in my contemptuous hate for the AF and Navy? :o

Nah, but when even a guy like me is looking at their projects wondering how in the fuck they're going to afford it (even against a US mil budget) you kinda have to ask where the hell they reckon the money is coming from.

Wouldn't it be easier for me to find you a nice Tank Battalion as an FA Observer?

ive also seen the one in san diego when the sherman was moored there . my understanding is that was a prototype ( an agly one ) for the litoral ship mentioned earlier .
