    Hey guys (and girls),

I know I'm not known here, but I was just wondering if this sounds like a good plan...

After nearly 6 years of dating, I'm finally going to pop the question. Why did it take so long? Well, we both agreed we'd wait until we were both out of school and had good jobs before we even thought about marriage....I graduated about 2 years ago, and she just graduated a few months ago. The prerequosite has been met.

We also had some issues in the recent past...I even think I came here for advice. I ended up having a few long conversations with her about the things that were bothering me, and about the things about me that bothered her...and we've both changed for each other...I took care of the things that were upsetting her, and she's done the same.

Anyway, on to the real story. We live in mid-Michigan, and we love to do things outdoors. I was thinking about planning a trip late summer up to Mackinaw Island (pictures below)...taking our bikes up there and riding around the island (no cars allowed on the island, and you have to take a ferry over there), then stopping on the windward side of the island (just beautiful there) and proposing on the beach. Sound good? Unfortunately, I can't do anything extravogent, but I thought this would be a way to make the whole thing memorable, give us a great place to come back and visit for anniversaries and such, and still be fairly inexpensive (minus the ring :))

Anyway, just wondering what you guys thought about that idea...here are some pictures to show the setting (sort of)

Realize that when you make a production out of the proposal, you then have to top that with the wedding, and then top that with the honeymoon...

Well, the trip to Mackinaw Island was something we had planned on doing anyway, so it's really not much of a production other than spending some time on a beach that we'd normally just ride past.

you suck. seriously, maybe you should just put the ring in a piece of shit, so you never have to think about doing anything out of the ordinary for the girl ever again. heaven forbid you should make it memorable.

OP, I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. Not too big of a deal, just a nice, fun day. Congrats!

Wow, settle yourself. I wasn't crapping on my bro's idea here. I was merely pointing something out. There's nothing against a beautiful, romantic setting for a proposal.

Mackinaw Island is a cool island. Nice and romatic for couples I guess. I had a fun time there a few years ago when I went out to visit my brother who was working out there. I wouldn't stay longer than a couple days though. And make sure to bring your own bikes. Shit is hella expensive on Mackinaw Island.

well I really dont think a nice proposal is going to make her suddenly change her mind and want the most extravagent wedding in the world if that isnt what she's been thinking she wants, nor would it make her expect him to empty his pockets for a honeymoon. sorry, but comments like yours just piss me off and I see them far too often on here. Men that refuse to ever do anything nice just because they dont want their girlfriends to ever desire anything in the future.

the whole thing is going to memorable because you are proposing, so dont worry about making sure its perfect, it will feel perfect to her no matter what

    congrats

I'm from Mid-Michigan (Midland, to be specific).

We'd be going up for the day...leaving really early and probably coming home that night. I might end up getting a hotel around there if I can find one cheap, but we're close enough to make a good day trip out of it (done it before).

get a hotel. You don't want to spend 4 hours of your happy day driving (+ however long the ferry trip takes). Plus, maybe she'll be in the mood for some mackinaw island hankey panky afterward.

I just think being able to relax and chill would be nice. you'll remember that instead of "remember all the driving we did when I proposed?"
