Someone changed my cowowrkers computer (Win XP Pro) to show the titles under the desktop icons in a strange way. The words under icons, for example "My Computer", are displayed so that the titles are only a couple of letters wide but are many letters vertically. I'veplayed with every setting I could find, used the windows help and have come up with nothing. Now I call upon the power of OT to help me fix this- can someone take pity?

i would think someone was messing with the advanced appearance settings, perhaps lowering this one to a very low value?

edit: scratch that - that refers to icons, not their labels

Can you take a screenshot and post it so we can see exactly what the problem is?

This is a screenshot of the problem- the fonts are larger than usual because I tried adjusting them to compensate. Basically, you can see that the letters won't display more than a couple across (regardless of font size), but will keep going down.

Font size has nothing to do with it unfortunately- it's large in that screenie because I was trying to see if raising or lowering the font size would have any effect.

then why did you post it? This is why no one can help you -- you ask for help, but you continue to change things. So I point out the large font size, and you admit that you did it yourself.

pick a state, keep it constant.

Have you tried resetting the theme?

    Try checking any/all of these..
    1. reduce the font size for the icons. go to advanced under 'appearance' in the display properties dialog. Select the item 'icon' then pick the font size. I believe the default is 8 or 10 (varies depending on theme).

    2. right click desktop, go to properties. click settings tab. click advanced button. under the 'general' tab, pick 96dpi if it isn't already selected.

    3. reapply your theme. pick any default theme, hit apply. if this fixes the problem, then try reapplying your old theme (if you had saved it before the problem started). If the problem returns, you'll have to go back to one of the default themes and recustomize your desktop from there.

    6. A shot in the dark, but check the value of 'IconTitleWrap' in

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

in the registry using regedit. Mine is a hex value set to 1. If yours is something else, set it to 1, and then reboot.

    good luck..
