Here's the 70-200 f/2.8L IS stopped down to f/4.0. The 70-200 f/4.0L is a good bargain at its price.

I was debating the upgrade to the 2.8 non IS but i really just couldn't justify the extra weight and money for just one stop. I might opt for the 100 f/2 or 135 f/2 one day

The 1 extra stop has a few benefits, though. Better bokeh at 2.8 than 4.0 and of course the obvious, 1 less shutter stop. I like to shoot indoor sports so the IS is worth about 2 shutter stops and the extra 1 aperture is worth the extra money. For those shooting outdoors with good lighting, the 2.8 non IS and 4.0 are fine.

yeah the IS version would be really the only worthy upgrade from the f4 although how does it really help with indoor sports if they are moving so fast? Either way I went the 5d and kept my 70-200 f4 rather than 30d + 70-200 IS and I am happy. I'm hoping to do more studio type work and that combo will be perfect

if you shoot at the lower aperture, it's worth 1 full stop of light so instead of shooting at 1/250 @ 4, you can shoot 1/500 @ 2.8. The IS won't help stop the action but it's good in getting the close up facial shots in between the action.

yeah...I was just making sure you weren't saying IS was helping with the action. I have trouble with dof at 200 f/4 I can't imagine f/2.8. Although, FF has some dof advantage/disadvantage for the same fov so maybe its not so bad on 1.6

I sold my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 yesterday, so if I were to buy a 70-200mm zoom in that price range, I'd get the Sigma again.
But I kind of want to move up, and I really want IS, so the 70-200IS is like the only choice.
