I spent less than 3 minutes retouching this pic.

I used pro-retouch from totally rad actions. A huge time saver since I have to look in one of my PS book for the directions every time I want to smooth skin. :mamoru:

    It shows...

Her eyes, lips and hair are smooth.

    Quick tip:

Use alt+ctrl+shift+e to create a new merged layer on top of your file, run the action on that, and use a layer mask to remove the smoothing effect off of the areas that should be sharp.

    Otherwise it looks ridiculous.

I don't like it. Especially the eyes. The action makes it look more like a soft focus than skin smoothed.

the effect is painted one with a brush so there is no need for another layer. I can easily lower the opacity of the areas that don't need much or simply not paint those areas.

    Oh, ok.

There are some key areas to avoid - hair, eyebrows, eyes, the hole in their nose (the fuck is that called, anyway?!?), mouth, fingernails, and you want to slightly lower it anywhere the skin creases...

Not busting your balls, These actions will definitely make your life easier. Just gotta be careful with em. Too much is often worse than not enough.

Just for shits and giggles, I did an edit.

Notice how the eyes and mouth stand out in the image now, drawing you in...

You'll notice I went back and retouched it without adding the effect to the mouth, eyes or hair. I don't like the contrast between "retouched" and "untouched" areas to be too noticeable.

Maybe you youngsters prefer more of the "grungy" look.

You're right. It's nice but it's not something I would do. The skin on her left cheek looks likes it cracking.

    portraiture is good shit.

I have the Nik color efex pro suite at work that has a smooth skin feature that looks almost identical to portraiture, and I don't mind the masking myself, so I decided not to buy both...

But I do like it, and it's easy as shit.

My edit was done on my old powerbook, so it was layers and gaussian blur... No outside effects at all.

and the first filter looks fine as long as you use a layer to put some detail back into eyebrows eyelashes eyes lips etc.

Actually now that I look back at it, it looks like the cellulite on my last models ass and I'm just to lazy to fix it right now.

    .

Even though the actions are quite ok as long as you use them at 80% and mask, I always manually smooth. It's the difference between artisan, detailed PP and "look at me I click buttons", easy PP.
