Just trying out a cheap-o zoom lens until I get the cash to get a "real" lens

:werd: if you HAVE to get another lens, get the 50mm f/1.8 for about $70

Get it if you are in need of a zoom right now.

Then pick it up and do what you need to do. Once you save up just sell this lens or something and take a slight loss. But at least you wouldn't be missing shots that required the zoom.

I have that lens I pick up at Wal-Mart one day. It's slow to focus, but takes good pics for what you pay for.

I have that lens. I'm not a professional photog by any means so I will not ever pay 1000+ for a lens if I dont have to. The quality of the lens is just fine and the photos are great. I have had people tell me how great some of my photos are, also tell me how shitty that lens is. I never told them I took the photo with that lens though.

Some people are just elitist pricks though.

It's a great lens for the money.

:werd: since getting into photography I notice way too many elitist assholes who spend more time talking about fucking gear than practicing taking pictures or learning what the fuck makes a good picture; and its not what 800 dollar lense you have.

It's not a terrible lense for the money but there are some people that do regret not waiting and spending more for a higher priced lense from the start.

Why? What are some clearly noticable differences?

For instance, you are in an art gallery, you have two photos. Not necessarily of the same thing, but one is with a much pricier lens, the other is with the above mentioned.

Who in the right mind would be able to tell? "Hmmm I wonder how expensive the lens was that he used or how much it was?"

I just think realistically for myself. Sure, having a very nice, fast lens is great to have, but totally not necessary.

    :)

I agree... a good lens isn't going to make miracles... go out and shoot. Some of the best photos are not done with pro lenses.

Most of us here that have some experience can tell the difference in quality of lenses. In this case, it'd be evident in less-than-ideal-lighting situations. The f/4 is a bit slow for indoor shooting with moving targets (ie basketball games). For outdoor, f/4 is fine. But like I said, some would rather just pay the extra money and go with a faster zoom lense than buying one, seeing the results (for their application) and be disappointed. If you never shoot indoor, no real reason to dump $1600 into a fast zoom lense.
