I've been looking around and S&W has released their M&P in 5.45 x 39mm, rather than the 223/5.56. It costs a little more on the front end, but ammo from wolf is almost $60.00 less per 1000. I'd make the money back in 4 cases over buying a 5.56.

Is this an acceptable round to put through, and are there any reasons not to go with the 5.45? I don't know how available the ammo is, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

5.45x39 is plentiful now, but who knows in the future.

Is there anything that would hint this particular round may trickle out?

Any trade restrictions with russia would end the supply.

Are you going to buy locally or order?

Probably order through a local shop. I'd rather let them order it, and give them my money.

I've read some decent reviews on this stuff, and with the saving I'd get, if I can get even 10,000 rounds, it'd make up enough savings to eventually just buy a new .223/5.56 upper to put on it. Getting 1080 rounds for 110.00 is way better than 1k .223 for 280.00. Only inconvenience is that they're corrosive, so it's a little more cleaning from what I gather. I even hear that the 5.56 USGI mags work fine with the 5.45.

I've tried loading 5.45 into AR mags and IIRC I couldn't make it to 15. I highly doubt they would feed reilably either. Maybe I need a different follower, who knows.

I still haven't heard any reviews of the S&W 5.45 rifle so we'll see. I wouldn't mind a good upper in 5.45 but I'm not going to hold my breath. If you want to shoot the cheap ammo, just buy a nice AK and be done with it.

If you've got your heart set on the AR platform, better start reloading. I just bought components to load at .17/round, which is a lot cheaper than what I payed for the last case of brass 5.56 I bought ($340.)

Which shop? I know CCA has a decent selection of AR garb, doubt they've got a 5.45 upper in stock but they had a pile of tacticool crap last time I was in there.

I'll probably call Frontier Firearms out in Kingston and see what kind of price they can do for me.

Gallery of Guns listed a few local sellers that could order the gun, one was actually a Pawn Shop on Clinton Hwy, but they basically charge a nominal fee to order guns from wherever you want.

I'm set on an AR, and haven't really looked into reloading due to being stuck living in an apartment. I can get the 5.45 stuff cheap, can get 3240 rounds for $360.00, just 80 or so more than 1,000 in 5.56.

The magazine issue is the only thing. Some people say they load fine, others are having trouble. S&W is shipping them with mags marked 5.45 with different followers, but I want to find out more about that.

The one down where Clinton hwy turns into Clinch? I think I know the one you're talking about, it's kinda shady looking :mamoru: I called them when I was looking to buy a lower and their prices were retarded.

Hm, maybe. I'm gonna try Frontier Firearms first...I like them. If that pawn place is shady, I may just have Frontier do and transfer for me and go pick it up.

I'm pretty sure that's the one, I don't think there's another pawn shop on Clinton hwy but I know the part from emory - 275 better than I do down by Clinton...

I've never dealt with Frontier so I can't help you there :o

Frontier is where I bought my pistol, it's a small husband/wife owned business with a pretty great inventory. Gonna give them a call in a couple weeks.

Noone local has it, so I'm looking to order it. Bud's had it for 805 shipped, but is out of stock. A place in tx has is for 829. Then I'd have to do a 30.00 FFL fee.

Nice, I didn't know there was another gun store over there. I know where Guns n more is, but still no idea about Frontier lol.

well, I just ordered 2160 rounds of 5.45 ammo and a pretty cheap rear sight to use until I find a permanent solution. Now if my roommates will pay me some money they owe, I can order the damn rifle.
