I need to decide on which variant to get. It's going to be a long range "sniper" rifle. Considering the PSS at the moment but def open to suggestions. Any input?

I own a 700 5R and it's a very accurate rifle. I'm very happy with my purchase. That being said, you should also evaluate the Savage 10FP and Tikka T3.

I'm sure any bolt action rifle of this type will be more rifle than I need. I still want to buy something very capable though. As for an actual distance I would say 200-300 yds

what are you using it for?

.308 is a great caliber and will do just about anything you want, but anything that shoots lead will be fine at 200-300 yards.

just ask alkyhauler. he can shoot a .357 magnum at that range with a 5 micron spread.

223 is cheaper than 308, and perfectly shootable at those ranges. Regardless of whatever headstamp you pick, the bullet(s) you are shooting will likely be of much more importance. I'll skip the long spiel on bullets and reloading.... but yah, you need to buy a press and roll your own.

Anyways, 700P's are what most people get as far as a budget entry into long range. 5R's are probably a better rifle (def. a better barrel), and I prefer LTR's myself (lighter/compacter, all which gives me the warm/fuzzy). Cheapest/best way to get into the game is to buy used and piece one together yourself, but I've been reminded several times (and rightfully so) that not everyone has the time/desire to do that.

There's upsides and downsides into nearly everything you will pick/be told to pick. Most of which you honestly probably won't be able to truly understand until you shoot more. Most helpful advice I think I could give you is to by the cheapest rifle you could, and then spend extra money on glass and a single stage press. The more you shoot, the more you will likely change your rifle. Most factory stocks suck, and that will likely not take you long to figure out. Same with triggers. Good glass tends to stick around a long time, and a reloading press will last nearly forever.

That's a lot of conjecture that you probably didn't want to hear. If you are just wanting a cool boltgun to say you have one, buy a 5R and ditch the stock for a McM, and tweak the trigger yourself. You'd be 8/10's of the way there.

Unfortunately, will probably have to re-cut it since I'm re-doing my AR.

If you plan on the types of targets that move around and wear armor, get the .308. :o

the .308 was the standard for 40 years om the M24 platform. Stating in Panama and the first Gulf War the Lapua was the round of choice.
Like I said, I KNOW guys in Va that develop shit for the SEALs, I think I know just a little bit more about what is actually used in the
    field than some keyboard warrior.
