I've been thinking of building an AR. I'll build the lower from parts and slap an upper on it. I'm sure I'll end up with something distinctly frankenrifle, but I don't care. I just want something that's pretty decent all-around and inexpensive. Not going to mount an absurd scope on it, nor do I want a 24" varmint upper. I'd like something more accurate than my AK.

Any suggestions? I can source RRA, Stag, and DPMS lowers for ~$150, ~$120, and ~$110 respectively. Otherwise ... not so sure what to go for.

slap a 20" upper on and you`ll be good to go

Compare the finish quality between the three lowers and buy the one that feels the best to you. I don't think they are really all that different.

Who other than Rock River Arms makes uppers with hybrid .223/5.56x45 chambers? I'd like to be able to shoot both.

alot of other companies do.as long as it says "5.56"on the barrel, you`re good to go.now if it says ".223"you`ll only be able to use .223

    The frankenrifle is (mostly) complete.

My digicam is sorely lacking when subject to lighting conditions other than "high noon."

    So far...
    • DPMS lower - $130
    • DPMS parts kit - $65
    • RRA 20" rifle upper - $508
    A mere ~$700 thus far.

    Courtesy richk:
    • RRA Tactical Carry handle w/ rear sight
    • RRA Hogue pistol grip
    • RRA M4 collapsible stock/buffer tube
    • Generic sling
Likely upgrades since it doesn't seem that AR ownership is ever "cheap":
    • Rifle stock (collapsible stock doesn't seem to buy me much with the 20" barrel)
    • Better handguard (Sounds like a rail system)
    • Flashlight mount (Those mount to rails, right?)
    • Bipod (futhering the rail system theme)
    • Scope (nothing crazy - 4-10x or thereabouts)
    • Flip-up backup iron sight
The only real problem that came up during lower assembly was loss of one of the takedown pin retainers. Figure that Cheaper than Dirt will have such a thing, or perhaps a local gunsmith.

yeah, until you start looking around at a few websites and deciding that for
some reason, you really do need to put a can-opener, flashlight, tape dispenser,
IR and visible lasers, and a butt scratcher on it. :bigthumb:

I already have plans to build my own attachments... here's what I have in mind:

Dry erase marker bayonet lug, for tactical planning,
    Pizza cutter, for tactical eating,
Ginsu bayonet adapter, for any aluminum cans I encounter,
and some sort of cheese grater, for making tactical dips...

Actually I will be putting an AAC, EoTech 552, GG&G single point mount, and I think that will be it.

Much more realistic than my initial plans of "doing nothing to it."

Best target today at 50 yards over irons:

Nothing spectacular, but much better than I have ever managed with my AK. Was mostly trying to figure out what sort of sight picture worked best with the iron sights. I imagine I can improve if I work on shooting technique.
