I've been buying/selling a lot of gear lately and finding that I'm not using everything as much as I'd like. I've also gotten hooked on fast primes (first the Sigma 30mm and now the 35L) and the only zoom I have that's getting frequent use is the Tokina 11-16. I literally haven't picked up the 70-200 in 2 months, I just don't think it's a focal length I use much.

I've only had my 5D for two weeks and I'm already hooked on FF, but I'm missing some of the bells and whistles of my 40D, like the larger screen, live view, etc...I can't help but lust after the 5D mk II.

Here's my current setup: (and approximate price I can fetch if I sold)
    5D gripped ($1300-1400)
    40D ($700)
    35L (not selling)
    24-70L ($925)
    70-200 f/4L IS ($925)
    100 f/2.8 Macro (not selling)
    Tokina 11-16 ($500)
Kenko Teleplus Pro 1.4x (not selling)

    I'm thinking of switching to:
    5D mk II ($2700)
    17-40L ($550)
    35L (already have)
    85L II ($1600)
    100 macro (already have)
    and either the 100-400L ($1100) or 135L ($800)

I could sell everything but the 35L and use that money plus ~$300 to pick up the 5D mk II, 17-40L, and 85L II. I think that's a fairly simple kit that I could be happy with.

I'm likely going to pick up or rent the 100-400L at the end of the year when I go to South Africa for a safari. I'm hoping Canon announces a replacement before then, but not getting my hopes up.

What does OTAP think? Am I crazy? Should I just be happy with what I have?

wait... the 11-16 works on the full frame sensor? I thought it was a crop?

Also, if you still get a good amount of use from it, why would you sell it and not replace it with anything close?

Other than that, I don't see any problems with what you wanna do... looks pretty good.

I use the tokina on my 40d. The 17-40 on a FF camera is also an UWA lens. I'd lose a stop but I only really use the lens stopped down outside. You can actually use the tokina on FF but only from 14-16mm which basically makes it a prime.

I would say do it if I had teh 500 bucks to buy the tokina. SO I say you should hold and think about this for a few more weeks

The admin of the texas photo forum is selling all his gear and going minimal... and by that, I means he's only keeping a 5D2, 35L, and a 135 f2! He's the crazy one I think, not you. But I guess its what you feel comfortable with. I don't think I can do it yet, but it'd be nice to have 2 bodies and 2 lenses for everything. Challaging, yes... but might turn you into a better photographer in the long run.

I'm waiting at least a month anyways, so if you're still interested you can be first in line (the tokina is 2 months old).

Wow, that is pretty minimalist. I'd need something wider than the 35L for landscapes, and I feel like I'd also need something in the middle, like a 50 or 85.

I'm thinking of holding on to the 40D just because it's so cheap anyways. But honestly, I don't ever see myself going out with two bodies. I'm not a wedding shooter, so this is less important to me. I'm just thinking I might want the extra reach and FPS for my South Africa trip.

I think I'm going to sell the 40D first, and hold onto the 5D for at least a few months. If/when I sell the 5D classic I'll let you know.

Sneak out a couple bucks a day for the next month or so, then buy a money order with the cash!
