I sold my XD-9 service yesterday to a friend since it just gathers dust, so now i've decided to get my first 1911. What do you guys think of a Rock Island Armory 1911? They can be had for around $300. I don't plan on customizing it except for basic stuff like sights or grips. Should I spring for the Springfield mil-spec instead?

To tell you the truth, you can't go wrong with either the RIA or the Springer. A lot of it depends on your budget, and what they're going for locally. I picked up my RIA for $309 out the door, cheapest Springer would have been at least $100 more around here. And college doesn't leave me a lot of disposible income.

I've shot several thousand round thru it and love it to death, and trust my life to it completely. Actually just got home a few minutes ago from a ~400 round low light/Night Fire course. She ran flawlessly.

Also if anyone talks about Forged Vs Cast....non-issue...guess what Browning HP's are? Cast. Also don't let them being made in the Phillipines scare ya, most of Springfields guns are made in Brazil. You can't go wrong with either.

Rock islands are garbage. A new basic springfield loaded is 619 or so, has NS's.

If you guys bash RIA's so much, you ever shot one? I'd put my RIA up against any of your Springers or other similar guns in a torture test. They all go bang. Let people buy what they want....not everyone wants a Springer Loaded/Glock/RRA AR-15

I just need a basic 1911 for the range, doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, it just has to perform reliably out of the box. I'm not limiting myself to $300, I would gladly spend 4-500 if thats what it takes to get a decent gun.

RIA's are fine, but might need a little polishing of the feeding ramp, occasionally they could use a better extractor/spring and use good magazines.

not a bad gun for the money. springfield makes a great 1911 though, and it has a lifetime warranty.

if you want even more accuracy or goodies, 500-600 will get you a nice kimber, used.

I'm sorry If I was blunt, but I think you for 600 that is the best bargain. It's basic as it come, but still quality.

Warranty is a non-issue as well, as Armscor US warranty's the RIA's as well. Ivan over there is very active on 1911forums.com and works at a level I wish everyone in the industry did.

If I had a rust problem, I would rather have that than an unsupported chamber and kabooms.

No, we just get tired of it in every single fucking XD thread!

Kind of like how the Glock owners get tired of hearing about how Glocks Kaboom all the time...

OK on 1911 forums RIA has gotten some really good reviews, but a few bad ones as well. personally I chose to go Springfield loaded. $600 with lots of goodies and an excellent gun. I will say this will go into CHL rotation, all RIA bashing aside not something I would do with an RIA without alot alot alot of rounds through it.

Well since I don't have a rust problem, Id rather have a rust problem than risk the gun blowing up in my hand. You can always refinish the gun, I dunno if you can weld a gun back together...

I'll be purchasing a RIA 1911 soon.. but it won't remain in it's stock configuration for long.

They're not bad for the price.. a little tweek here & there that may cost a couple of bucks will fix most problems out of the box. They're not bad for their price.
