friend has been trying to talk me into it for years every time i see him. supposedly the signing bonus is 20k right now which is straight up ridiculous. plus, i'm getting damn sick of working a 9-5... coming home... and repeating the process.

where should i start? i guess just go talk to a recruiter?

This is just hearsay around the military recruiter's plaza, but the Army sign out front says something around 20k signing bonus... I heard u might see 2k of that.

Why army? Go Marines. Not to say money isn't important, jump into the military for a shitty signing bonus. I joined after a 2 year downer working several positions for AT&T. Best decision i've ever made. I feel like I have purpose, you inherit a brotherhood. You earn pride, respect and a SHITLOAD of benefits, low interest rates(VA loans)and discounts on nearly everything.

i know the bonus is spread out over 4 years or something... but i don't see how i'd only see 2k of it.

i've read that the army is the only branch that can guarantee you a job as an MP before you go in. and that's what i really want to do.

    this

you'll probably hate your life in garrison as an MP and even more when you're deployed.

    jonno,

When you enlist in the Army, you will know, before you sign your contract what your job is, when you report to training, and what your enlistment bonus is. Currently, it is $20,000. You will receive $10,000 when you complete Basic Training. The remainder will be paid at 25% of the remaining balance each year for the next 4 years (about 5K a year.) Taxes will be taken out of course, but it will be a lot more that $2000 that you will actually see.

Anyway, there are basically two types of MP's. One is like the typical cop. He rides around on the base and gives out speeding tickets, proactively prevents crimes and investigates complaints. OTOH, there are other MP's that deploy and manage detainees, much like the ones in Abu Grahab and Guantanimo Bay. If there is a Reserve Unit within 50 miles of your location, go and visit them and see what jobs they have to offer.

Also, you may consider active duty. You can enlist for as little as three years for most jobs and then do time in the Reserves. There currently is a test program in which you do 3 Active, 3 Reserves, and you get $30,000 enlistment bonus.

If you are really interested in information about the Army, PM me. I know a Recruiter in Mass who can take good care of you.
