school me on them. looking to get a nice one, that i can modify as a sort of entrance into the gun hobby.

it will be used for hunting might i add. boar hunting exactly. so anything goes.

there will be no super crazy optics

maybe a stock change, pistol grip, flashlight, bigger mag.

if you're going to add a pistol grip or bigger magazine to an SKS, you might as well get a fucking AK

my uncle bought 20 with a friend in the late 80's. they came out to ~$80 a piece. i killed my first hog with an SKS. I kept them as beat around guns, i have one in my ranch truck cab, and another in a closet in my ranch home.
    some old pics...

as said early. the ones with high caps suck big balls. the lower one use to have a 30 on it, then i reconverted it to use stripper clips.

I had one and got my first deer with it. I bought and AR and sold it. I'd say save the money and get an AK.

    Ugh

The sks is a cheap rifle, if you buy one just shoot it, don't turn your cheap rifle into an expensive (and dumb looking) cheap rifle.

Get a M59/66 and remove the grande launcher. Cheapest option.

Tapco sells the most common replacement stock but I think it's ugly

Get a WASR it'll be cheaper in the end for what you want to do, and more reliable with high cap mags. If must be an sks get the yugo their cheap and plentiful noone will care if you butcher it.

SKS's made up to try to be AK's are stupid. First they don't run, second by the time your done, you could of had a real AK.

i just want something cheap, somewhat reliable and thats not gonna worry me if i scratch it.

its mainly going to be used to take to the deer lease for pig hunting in the brush.

Tapco gear for the SKS is the best. Their mags are very reliable.

You can get whatever you want to get. If you want a sks get a sks. If you want to bolt a bunch of stuff to a sks to try to make it like a AK, then go ahead and do that too.

If you want people who know what they are talking about, have experieince with the ak, sks platforms to stroke you and say it's a good idea then your wasting your time.
