I want to get some info about the possibility of getting it re-chambered in 300 WSM.

From what I've found doing so would give it better ballistics than a 300 win mag with less recoil.

wow.. that's really interesting... i had no idea that it was that close to the .300 win mag...

who all makes rifles in .300 wsm other than winchester, and how well is the market taking....

my next hunting rifle will be a .30-06, .300 win mag, or .300 wsm...

How expensive is it? I hate paying $40 for 20 rounds of 7mm mag.

The .300 win mag I shot had a hell of a lot more recoil than my rem 700 in .308, granted it was lighter, but it kicked like a mule! I suggest you shoot one first, before you make a descision.

I was saying the 300 WSM has less recoil than the Win Mag.

I can always add a muzzle brake.
Not really worried about the price to shoot, I'm not that big of a target shooter.

The cartridge isn't that much bigger than .308, would a gunsmith be able to do it with my existing barrel?

I dunno if you'd run into feed problems or not, as the WSM actions are (IIRC) slightly shorter than then a .308 length. :dunno:

and in my Nosler manual the WM is usually about 100 fps faster than the WSM :o

and the recoil velocity for the WSM is wrong in that chart.

pretty much everyone chambers it and it's really the only short mag that's doing well.

There was a few months in between the time I last bought some cartridges, I was unpleasantly surprised when they told me the price.

I compared two shells next to each other and the WSM was just slightly longer than the .308.

It should still be less recoil than the Win Mag..They probably just left the 1 off, most likely 13.6.

Oh and your bolt face is entirely wrong for short mags so you'd have to change that too.

Any calculator I've used gives about 3-5lbs less recoil than a .300WM, nothing to write home about. And I was referring to recoil velocity, my .243 puts out about 10lbs of recoil energy. :o

And if you're really interested in this I'd ask on another bored with more knowledegable people, no offense to anyone :hs:

We're heading to the gun shop to get a scope for my dad's 270. I had planned on talking to them about it, just wanted to get a basic understanding of any potential problems that might come up.

I found out the 300 WSM isn't very accurate in factory loads. So if I wanted to re-chamber my gun to that I'd have to start reloading.

saying factory loads aren't accurate isn't a fair statement to make, it really depends on the rifle more than anything. And if anything, the short-fat case design of the WSM's are considered to be an inherently accruate design that benchrest competitors have used for years in the 6mmBR, PPC, and others. That really just sounds like a load of gun store misinformation.

Still talked me out of messing with a rifle that's pretty decent as it is. If I build another I'll go bigger, but I don't think I'm going to try modifying this one and chance ending up with nothing.

Yeah, I think you made the right decision. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

and at least you'll have an excuse to get another rifle, which is always a good thing.
