Seeing that I can get one for under 150 at my local Gander Mtn. and that surplus ammo for it is only about $100 for 440 rounds I figure I minus well pick one up just to fuck around with. Are they decent rifles? I like how historical they are but I also want something I can shoot as well.

#1 look at the bore, being surplus rifles the condition varies drastically.
#2 look at the date and plant stamp (where was it built?) Year of manufacture...do the numbers match?
#3 does it come with all accessories, oiler, ammo pouch, cleaning kit, bolt adjust tool

Or just buy one from here and do the $10 hand select option

depends on the condition of the bore....oh and they kick like fucking mules. be prepared for bruises after about 20 rounds especially with heavy ball ammo

Over the years I've gotten a little picker with my guns. Just being cheap isn't always all there is. MN's go bang. If thats all you want, they do it. I don't personally find them to be amazing rifles and would spend a little more. Even in the surplus arena $200 will get you a k31 thats a far better rifle.

Mosin Nagant is a great starter rifle. Its cheap and its fun to shoot. I kinda felt spoiled shooting it as my first gun. Shooting a pistol after 200 rounds through a nagant was kinda "meh".

$150 seems like a lot for a Nagant. I picked two up for ~$50 each from a local guy. Watch the ARFCOM EE for deals, there's lots of people that buy 5-10 keep the very best 2 or 3 and sell the rest. Mosins are fun, but I wouldn't pay more than $100 for one.

Like Soy said, if you're going to drop $150 on a C&R gun, might as well get something like a K31 for a little bit more.

Holy shit. I read the title of the thread and was just about to tell you they had them at Gander Mt. for $149. I actually stopped by there today and looked at a few. The guns seem to be in good condition although there was some wiggle in the bolt when it was pulled back, Im not sure how bad that is.

Thats pretty expensive actually, around here both the M44 and 91/30 go for under $100 and you can order cans of 440rds of ammo online for around $75. But yes they are great shooting guns and very fun, my M44 was the first rifle I ever bought and I love it.

It's all about finding the pocket. The first time I shot my M44 I was ready to cry after about 20 rounds because I had the stock way up high on my shoulder. It took a little experimenting but I finally found the right spot to shoulder it and now I can shoot 50 or more rounds no problem.
