Something for someone who has shot rifles etc before but never a handgun.

Something rugged, reliable, not too expensive, and pretty easy to take care of.

    Any suggestions??

Glock, the model depends on your intended use, home defense, carry, target only, combo?

It's obvious you need a glock

As said, the only thing that you need to figure out is what you wanna do with it. Then you can narrow it down from there.

XD or Glock given your details. Figure out which one fits your hand best and
    go.

    I have a 9mm by my bed, I have a 40 on a shelf in my home office. I'm
confident a shot to the torso from either is going to go a long way in
    changing an intruder's plans.

Take a safety class or something, rent some guns at a range and see what you want. I suggest 9mm because its cheaper to practice with and thats what matters.

Hm, I remember a sticky on this very subject... Ah yes, here it was:
    http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=1582007

9mm is probably the most popular pistol caliber out there. Inexpensive, widely available with tremendous variety, manageable recoil for the beginning shooter, stopping power that is generally considered acceptable, and most manufacturers offer 9mm model(s).

If you're not so certain on concealed carry and quite certain about range and home defense use, you might want to look into full-size pistols like the Glock 17, XD9, or similar which offer large grips, greater magazine capacity, and longer barrels for greater accuracy. If target shooting is your thing, look for models with longer like the Glock 34 or XD9 tactical. I'm making Glock and Springfield XD recommendations only because those are the two manufacturers I know the most about - try a bunch of models from numerous manufacturers and choose the one you like best.

you should look at a .22 caliber so you don't cry and piss your pants when you fire it. go over to ar15.com and look in the classifieds section. just don't shit on their threads like a little bitch like you do on this forum unless you wanna get banned.

but really, i'd tell you to get a sig but I know how cheap you are so i'm just gonna say get a glock 19.

I'd get a G19 if you were gonna carry it or a G17 for home defense/range. The G19 is definetly an all around gun but if you won't carry it at all there's no sense to getting the smaller frame.
