currently I have the 17-85 IS which is pretty meh

    I have a 10-22 and a 100-400

which brings me to my question, which would I miss more

one stop with the 24-105 F4L IS, or the 45mm gap with the 17-55IS F2.8, I'm pretty torn between the 2 :o

I think I would miss IS if I was to get the 24-70 F2.8L

I have the 24-70 and I dont think you would miss IS much. IS is much more useful with telephotos.

    Me personally?
    Id get a 70-200.

When I go shooting, I take my 16-35, my 70-200, and then either my 135/2 or 15 fish.

Thats just me though. If I need just one lens, I take only my 24-105.

    my wife already has a 70-200F4 non-is :o

the 10-22 and 100-400 used to be almost all I used, but I find myself shooting midrange more and more often :o

maybe try renting all three of them for a weekend and see which one you like better. personally, given your other lenses, i wouldn't get the 17-55. i'd get eitehr the 24-105 or the 24-70, probably the 24-70.

You'd only miss one stop until a certain point with the 24-105. After a certain focal length, you'd gain some stops.

The 24-70 f/2.8 is a sweet lens, definentally one of my favorites, I'm sure you won't miss the IS with that lens.

I had the 24-105 IS and sold it for the 24-70. Glad I did.

That's why I did it. Better for portraits, IMO, though I did get some good results at 105 @ f/4
