I'm thinking about buying the same thing...I have an older iPod and after the abuse I put that thing through and the fact that it's still going strong I don't think I could buy anything but an iPod for an MP3 player.

I was never an iPod fan, for years. But when I re-did my car audio set-up, I wanted a mass storage device that I could carry all of my music on, eliminating the need for me to carry CD's in my car. The iPod or Zune was really my only choice. I picked the iPod because of it's fantastic interface compatibility with my Alpine deck over the Zune. And after a half year of using this set-up I can say Apple has converted me now. Im a fan.

It's really amazing how durable and long-lasting they are. My friend still has a 1st gen or 2nd she uses in her car. Amazing how even the B&W models still have uses.

iPod classic is a little more than other MP3 players but mine has all my music on it and is still working strong after pretty rough treatment.
Only negative I can think of is if your battery craps out your screwed.

Only negative I could think of is the transferring of music. With my mp3 Sansa, I can double it as a jumpdrive (i.e. transfer mp3s from home comp to my work comp)...

You have to love the available gb of the higher end iPods.

Did they update the numerous issues that came with the Classic when it first came out (Coverflow being awful, lagging/skipping music, among others)?

I haven't updated mine in almost a year.

I've had my newest gen classic for about 6 months now and I've never experienced any of those problems. The only problem I've had occasionally is the iPod will freeze rarely when hooked up to my Alpine deck. Just requires a quick 30 second restart, but I'd say it happens maybe once a month.

not really any reason you shouldnt...the wheel could get slightly annoying if you have a large library ( over 1000 diff artists ). go for it.

I'm another person that swore never to get an iPod, then needed an MP3 player this year for the hour trip each way to work.. did heaps of shopping around, reluctantly bought a 120gb Classic to "give it a go", and ended up absolutely loving it.

Don't get it. They are doing away with that interface sooner or later. It's all about the Touch/iPhone interface. The classic's suck in cold weather too.

i have a few iPods including the iPod Touch and an iPhone. for just listening to music, it is frustrating to not have buttons especially in a car. if you don't care about having to pull the iPod out constantly if you want to switch songs instead of just pressing a button, that's fine. oh, it also isn't such a big deal if you are using it in a car with iPod controls built in.

other than that though, the iPod Touch is awesome for videos and little games.

Get a Creative Zen X-Fi instead. I have one and it's awesome. I'm not locked into using a single brand of software either.

i have a 4th gen black and white ipod that i've had for years... i have it hooked up in my car since my deck interfaces with it. All these years and it till holds about an 8 hour charge.

for portable music, i have an ipod touch...

everyone says "oh you can get some way better for way cheaper"... which is true, but later on if you want accessories for it, good luck... in comparison apple has more accessories in a single class than it does competitors over all...
