I'm 5'9", about 190lbs. I have a decent amount of muscle mass, but I also have excess fat in my chest and spare tire region. I'm 23 years old.
I've stopped lifting for the most part, as I'm not too concerned with size at this point, I really just want to lose the fat.
    I do cardio 4-5 times a week.
30 minutes running (7MPH or so)
    10 minutes biking (high resistance)
    20 minutes elliptical (high resistance)

I keep my heart rate more or less in the high intensity region for the majority of my workout. My only breaks are in between each different set for water.

I don't have a very strict diet, but it is mostly common sense. VERY little fast food (one a week, if that), higher protein than carb intake, only eat when I'm hungry, try to keep the calories down in general. No candy, Ice cream, etc.

What do you think? Tips, etc?

    Thanks in advance.

I will work more on my diet. When I say fast food, I mean anything from sub sandwiches to Taco bell. Generally it's the former, if I can help it.
When I say decent muscle mass, I mean I'm not just a fat guy who's never lifted before and wants to lose weight. By any of your perspectives, I probably don't have much mass. I'll get a pic up later.
As I understood it, the best way to lose fat overall was to do cardio. I would lift, but apparently one can't spot-remove fat.

Nope, but you can increase or at least maintain the lean muscle mass you have. This will help you lose fat overall.

    LIFT HEAVY

    Fuck Cardio.

i'd suggest spending half your time on cardio and half on lifting. i've always seen this combo as the best fast loss method. thoughts? so on the extremes, either you do 1. all cardio, 2. half cardio and half heavy lifting, 3. all heavy lifting. which one do you lose the most fat in?

That's what I was doing before, but I figured to see any benefit from lifting, I would have to take in a good amount of protein, which would take me out of a caloric deficit, not letting me lose any weight.

Protien shakes (with water) only have about 120 cals.

that's assuming you don't change your diet to compensate for the protein. can't you eat 120 less carbs/fat?

lifting weight raises your metabolism so you lose weight, its worthwhile to lift weights even if you want to lose fat, combining both running and weights will help alot, there is not just one point to lifting (to get big) it can be used to help in a variety of ways, it will also help you to maintain your strength

Yeah, I was lifting mostly to maintain strength while still doing cardio. I'll switch back to doing a combination of both. Thanks for the advice.
But with this amount of cardio, does it seem plausible that I will start seeing results in a couple of months or so?

its mostly your food intake you need to watch, but with enough weight and cardio you will see results

If you watch what you eat you should start seeing results within the month.
Cut back 300 calories per day over a week+ 200 calories per day of carido = 500 calories deficit per day. 500x7=3500. 3500 cals = 1 lb. One pound per week with a modest calorie cut and cardio.

I only eat when I'm hungry and that's 6 times a day. I'm also 200lbs and take in approximately 3000-4000 cals per day.

Become strict about your diet or else you won't get anywhere. also, like everybody has said, and will say, you should probably lift weights so that when you lose weight you maintain your muscle.

i really don't think once a week is going to hurt too much.

    Just get subway or something.

Thanks. Yeah, It's been literally months since I've had like a burger or anything. It's usually a sandwich on wheat without mayo. Like I said, not strict, just kind of common sense stuff.
Mippity - When I do the hour of cardio that I outlined above, it says it has burned about 900 calories. You mentioned work out 200 per day? I can cut 300 without much of a problem.
