These days, domestic cars are almost as good as the Honda(s) and the Toyota(s)

    Quality-wise, they've closed the gap.

    As evidenced by this comment:
    Here's the problem:

Essentially, domestic cars are "almost" as good, "virtually" as good as the Hondas and Toyotas.

Should the American public therefore forgive the Domestics for the shoddy arrogance of past where they built shitty cars that broke down, just like clock-work?

To beat the Hondas and Toyotas, you have to be BETTER than them. You have to give the consumer a COMPELLING reason to check you out.

You can't be "almost" as good.

Heck, you can't even be "just" as good.

    You've gotta be better.

    Maybe, MUCH better.

As a consumer, I ask myself this: "Why should I buy a car from a car company who just recently got their act together to build quality cars, a car company that just a decade or two ago built cars that would fail regularly, a car company that didn't car for the consumer."

The *ONLY* answer I could come up with is the desire to subsidize American car companies. I want to give them a chance.

If I were a neutral consumer, I would not consider a Domestic, unless they were significantly cheaper.

And they'll have to be a lot better for a long time. A good reputation can be lost very quickly, but it takes a long time to gain it back.
I think that American cars are the only way to go. Why would you by a foreign car when you could support the American econmy by buying one of our own. GM is going in the right direction. The new malibu looks better than the Toyota trash.
Things will change.

The americans will come with competitive cars at low prices.

I think the new malibu will be a hit.

I also think the Cobalt SS turbo will be a huge hit w/tuner-morons.

The G8 might come fully loaded w/V8 for 32k; that thing would sell like hotcakes. Check autoblog.com, the have a story about the released pricing info.

fuck American cars. You can't shit all over your buyers for 30 years and then expect them to forgive it, if you had a few good years.

They can come out with a 600 hp car that gets 60 miles to the gallon and will last 50 years...and very few people will buy them because of negative image of the companeis

American car manufacturers are feeling the impact of 30 years of head-in-the-ground product and quality management. Sure, they're getting better, and they may even be on par with the Japanese in terms of quality (legendary Japanese quality is largely a myth anyway). But they're still way behind in product development.

There's a whole generation of car buyers (including me) who rule out anything domestic just purely because it's made in America.

it's not so much a quality thing now. It's because Toyota builds cars that appeal to people.

Honda has the S2000, Nissan has the 350Z, Ford has the Mustang, Subaru has the STi, and Mitubishi has the Evo. There's nothing else that OT would ever want to buy.

Most of your viewpoint, speaks to this bias, that the person you quoted was trying to eliminate.

BUICK has been ranked extremely high on quality for ~10 years. Right up there with Honda and Toyota.

IIRC, Lexus and Buick have traded spaces quite a bit, year over year.

Even more shocking, Mercedes actually ranks lower in QUALITY than Dodge.

GM makes shitty cars, because people would purchase their shitty cars.

    Plain and simple.

Now that consumers are spending their $$$ on other brands, GM is forced to adapt.

IMHO, there's some cool stuff coming out of Toyota.

I really like pretty much all of Lexus. Specifically the IS350, and the GS series. Very cool cars.

of course not. The general population does not need/want a Corvette or M5. They need soccer mom car like a Sienna or 4Runner. Or a economy car like a Corolla.

My mother refuses to buy anything but Toyota. Quality has gone downhill since the mid-90s, but she refuses to believe it. Anytime something breaks she automatically says that it was her fault. She's brainwashed into buying Toyota.

I've been trying to say this in defense of VW"s as car sfor the past few months. Almost all cars break. The difference is that a VW dealer is inept and can't/won't fix it, and even if they do they try and blame you and charge you thousands of dollars for a $200 job.
