especially when i end up not even flying :rant2:

seriously, it's a kick in the nuts to have to get up that early anyway, and then to sit around for 5 hours waiting to see if they fix your jet......goddamn i hate waking up early so much.

you know whats even worse? getting up many hours earlier to fix a jet for a bitch ass officer who more than likely has no idea what goes into the whole process and complains when shit doesn't go his way.

if the sortie generation rate was above 60% we wouldn't be so bitchy.

hard to get ready to go to war when you don't have a jet that can get off the ground

jesus christ, this wasn't meant to be a "bash maintenance" thread - i was just bitching about getting up early, because it's something i hate.

the maintenance situation here, shitty as it is, is not due to a lack of talent or hard work by the troops - it's a money/manpower issue, and it sucks for everyone involved, maintenance and ops.

at the same time, i get kinda sick of the "you're an officer, you don't do any real work" bullshit, because i don't think anyone realizes that we do actually do our fair share of work, especially on the ops side of the house. i routinely put in 50-60 hour work weeks, often more. i'm not trying to compare jobs, just trying to let people know that we don't sit around in air conditioning drinking coffee or watching TV all day.

the whole officer stigma, as funny as it might be to some, is pretty innaccurate in a real flying squadron.

People will stop saying things like that about officers the day pilots stopping drinking in their squadron/vault when they get back from boring holes in the sky.

I got a chuckle, but I guess that is the nice thing about rank. *blah blah blah, I wanted to rant somewhere in here but decided not to*

Just remember, when its zero dark thirty and you're rolling out of bed to possibly fly for the day, chances are the crew chief that will see you off has probably already been preflighting for hours already.:nono:

A sortie generation rate of 60% sounds piss poor, what are you flying, the BONE? Move to Buffs and request your first mission to be on 0058. I'll make it special for ya :naughty:

No animosity here. I have nothing but respect for officers. But there isn't much comparison when it comes to workload. When there's 12 guys to get six jets ready and still knock out a ton of ground handling stuff you're going to put in a feverishly busy 12 hours at a minimum. But somehow it'll take 36+ guys to go up in those six jets for six hours each and break them all to hell so our 12 guys can work for another 12 hours to get them all bedded down. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Still working on my degree so I can see things from the other side for once.

again, i wasn't trying to make job comparisons - aircraft maintenance is without a doubt one of the most demanding and thankless career fields in the military.

but again, it's not like we just show up when we want, go fly, break jets on purpose, or anything like that. our frustration comes in a different form - namely that we put in 8-10 hours of mission planning for each mission, in addition to our ground jobs or other squadron duties, and then come out to a jet only to have it either not ready or to have it break during ground ops.

the thing is, we don't blame the ground crews - or at least no aircrew should - i know they're busting their collective ass to get that jet in the air. it still doesn't make it any less frustrating.

it's a money/manpower issue, that's all. when you compare mission capable rates in the AOR to those stateside, that becomes obvious. the AOR jets get all the money and parts (like they should), and the crews do a shit hot job of getting those jets downrange.

I miss being part of a combat surge during an alert. It's an almost orgasmic event when it is done right.

Its not so much of a money issue with the B-52H. Its more that they just need to update them.
