    It's depressing.

I joined the nearest range/club a couple of years ago and I don't think I'm going to renew. $150 a year for a set of ranges which, aside from the single 5-plate pistol target machine (which is ALWAYS occupied), is a set of sandy, berm-enclosed fields where you have to bring your own target stands that are tall enough (usually 4-6') to make sure your shots hit the berm, since most of the ranges slope upward. You can only shoot skeet on the rifle range... when nobody is shooting rifles there. Oh, and enjoy the gnats and mosquitoes 7 months out of the year.

Meanwhile, there's a much nicer looking (and better equipped) club a full hour away, but they have a steep $400 joining fee (only $100/yr after) but they require a membership sponsor. I don't know anyone there, but driving an hour to go the range bugs me too. cantankerously actually lives/works pretty close to that club.

    Fuckin' thing sucks!

If you're looking to get in some shooting time, a lot of ranges will let you shoot the competitions without being a member. Most of the events will help you improve your skills a lot more than a static range.

I'm most interested in rifle shooting and the only competitions around here that do that just shoot paper. I really don't care about competitions. I just want a decent place to shoot.

I'd kill for a rifle range with a bunch of varied steel targets.

I can shoot at the NRA range (always busy, only 50 yards, 25 min away). But there is a private gun club literally 1.5 miles from my house out in the country, huge ranges, shotgun range, etc. Problem is the enormous membership fee :o :hsd:

That's one of the things I love about living in New Mexico. We have plenty of decent ranges, but we have even more wide open space where you can shoot for free. :hs:

It's 15 minutes from downtown, and when you get done, Route 66 Casino is less than 5 minutes away to the west. :big grin:

there's an unsupervised range near me that is private but lets anyone become a member by paying dues. i'm a member but don't go much, cause there's some dickwad out there that got NRA range safety officer certified or something and is always coming up to people and giving them shit and saying they are doing shit wrong when they aren't. whenever I go and see his truck there, i just turn around cause he's came up to me twice before and i wasn't even violating the club rules.
