    This is a sensitive topic to most. I personally don't like downloadable themes and always suggest people build their own. I just find it tacky to go to a website and see the same theme on that website on other websites. You'd probably disagree with me. But I'm sure if you had the knowledge to build and design your own themes you would probably prefer it that way.

    I noticed a co-worker of mine looking for Drupal themes. After a friend of his sold him the idea of creating a Drupal website for his band, he began researching. He already built his band website entirely in Dreamweaver (It's a piece of shit) and rather than admitting he's not capable of building his own theme, he just says he simply doesn't have time to build his own theme. :run:

    I'm sure I struck a couple nerves there. :run:

    Themes/templates are good for beginners or for quick jobs, but I see where you are coming from. I was using free css templates for some time but I was having too much trouble modifying them to suit my needs. Recently I got around to learning CSS and finished my first site from scratch and, I may be biased, but it looks 100% better than any thing that I started from on a template.

    Not at all.

    My point is it has a ~2500 alexa ranking, and uses an ugly TM theme.

    Success != a custom theme/layout.

    Well, then I agree with the tyranno whatever site with it's custom theme is pretty dope - but how much did it cost him? like $2k?

    And yes, if you can do it yourself, it's obvious that you should.

    Obviously the new SmiliesFTW is better than the POS myspace layout I put on it.

    I've never used a custom template for any site i've ever built.

    I might eventually if a client or something can't decide what they want or if they have a specific template in mind... but i don't think I ever would for a site I build for myself.

    I normally throw up a theme when i first launch any (personal) sites.

    Whenever i'm bored or have time i'll either design one and have someone code it, design and do some of my shitty coding or just pay someone to do it and try marketing myself.

    I just think that themes are good temp. After that it should probably be unique.
