the wifey and i are joining a gym tonight, apparently. Any "best" way to start it?

    i haven't been to a gym in years. it's time to go back, especially now that I have someone to go with.

    is there a "best" way to start back to the gym? I was just planning on going there & hitting the treadmill for ~30min, then doing some arm excersizes and then some crunches. does it really matter?

    been eating good for a few months now, so i'll definitely continue that.

    warm up with a few minutes on the treadmill and do a light, fullbody exercise..

    2 sets of:

    bench press
    squats
    deadlifts
    curls
    tricep pushdowns
    leg extensions or hamstring curls.

    I'd do that for a week or so to get your body used to being abused. Don't go heavy, you'll regret it and so will your joints and soft tissue.

    After that first week-10 days or wahtever, youc an switch to a more practical routine that encompasses a decent amount of volume, though the type of split you pick will be dependant on your goals and comfort.

    Definately stay light. I remember the doms after my first session with a trainer after not lifting weights in forever.

    If you're going to go to the gym, do it right. So many people at my work say: "I go to the gym all the time and I never see any results!!111one"

    Don't be one of those people.

    dont be one of those people who just go to use the treadmill. you can run outside.

    take advantage of the free weights.

    There are plenty of people at my gym who pay $100+ a month to just use the eliptical and tan at the pool. The gym is almost always empty.

    Couldn't agree more.

    There is ONE squat rack at my gym.

    1 - I NEVER have to wait to use it.
    2 - I ALWAYS have to move the spotter bars and pins from some variation of a curl position.

    Weight lifting will help you build a nice body under the fat, but you'll still have to lose the fat. Keep that in mind!

    Every other day, I'd say.. just for the first weekish. then move into something more advanced..do your cardio, eat healthy.

    Do something like

    Chest/Tri
    Off
    Back/Bi
    off
    Legs/Shoulders
    off
    Repeat

    do cardio on the off days.

    i got my wife on the modified Starr routine a couple of weeks ago. she's up to 115 with her a2g squats :bigthumb:

    once I hit the house my girl wants to hit the weights with me. told her a good routine that includes cardio and weight lifting is in order. she is all go for it. 3 months before i get home from kuwait!

    Thats baller! I've got my g/f doing the same routine with me, and the bar put her on her ass last night. She's doing great though, and I'm really pumped that she comes in and listens and does what I do instead of talking shit about how she's going over to the yes/no machine and this and that.

    If she's worried about 'getting big,' tell her she doesn't have testosterone and not to worry about it.

    It's not so bad. Now she understands why I hobble up and down stairs after a heavy squat day. :rofl:

    edit: Her "encouragement" often sounds like she's making fun of me though.
