The tank thread got me thinking about alternative shotgun loads. How effective are 12 gauge flechette shells compared to, say buckshot?

I believe we did some experimenting with the flechette rounds in Vietnam and they were found to be not all that effective when used at that level.

My understanding was that they were more effective for busting snipers and abushes through concealment (read: vegetation, light branches, other slight ballistic impedements) than 5.56x45 rounds - and only if you used a lot of them - than they were at anything else.

Did you have to pay $200 per shell for the DD paperwork?

What they found is that while they are better at cutting through brush with minimal trajectory deviation, they are about as effective as throwing a handful of broken glass at someone, which is to say, no very.

Only HE rounds qualify for individual DD classification.

    Flechette, gas, buckshot, etc dont.

I'd like to see how these pattern. We were bored one bay and loaded some .22's (bullets only) is a shotshell (using a shotgun reloader) and shot them for patterns. It was garbage as they turned and and tumbled in the air and probably the barrel. I'm skeptical how well the flechettes would stablize and how many hits you can get on 12" paper plates out at various distances. It would be interesting if somehow they held a tighter pattern than birdshot at extended ranges. This would make it a real good sporting application for hunting and gun games.

the thing is that the flechettes are darts, so they aren't going to spread all that much...

They are only darts if they make it out the barrel intact. Also there is going to be some spread as it will take them time to stabalize in flight. If there was lery little spread then it would not be effective in brush as were are led to believe. With all things shotgun I want to see it shot for patterns.

    Yup.

Bet they do much better in cylinder bore barrels than with chokes (which I expect that they would chew up). No matter what, they're going to spread out bouncing against one another, and depending on how they're packed, the darts exiting tail first will likely tumble a bit before stabilizing.

They should have amazing penetration capabilities, but being so tiny it's hard to say whether they have the devastating wounding potential that the CTD ad copy would have you think.
