    What would cause this?

It was low like 5gb then at one point it was up to ~20gb and now its back down to 3gb.

I haven't installed anything between that happening and have only downloaded a few pictures and mp3's (maybe 3cds worth) So I know that isn't taking up almost 15gigs. When it went from 5gb UP to 20gb I only deleted a few videos between that time and I'm not sure of when it actaully went up.

I'm not the most computer savvy person but I know a little bit and I just can't figure out why this is happening.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

could be system restore doing something weird, but I doubt it would fluctuate that much.

Page file / virtual memory being stored to the disk then being erased or a program you are running is writing a big ass log file temporary and then deleting it.

I remember way back when, there was a virus on Win98SE that did the same thing. When you finally located the file you couldn't delete it because Win didn't recognize the file name. The only way to delete it was to find out the files real name, or format.

man, I had this app that would show you visually your disk space usage per directory and file. That would probably help you if I could remember the name. Anyone know what I'm referring to?

So I use that and then how do I know what is causing the problem?

I have a couple really large .tmp files from March. I THINK they are from my Garmin map update. I should be okay to get rid of those right?

Besides that, I can't really see whats causing the fluctuation. :(

The winsxs folder is at 8.6gb according to that program. What is that? Can I delete it? :dunno:  :run:

Nope. Correct me if I'm wrong OT, but isn't that where the pagfile goes?

leave winsxs alone. you will run into problems if you don't know what you are doing.

simplest way is to run disk cleanup on the C:\. from that it removes temp fiels and what not. also delete all shadow copies except for the last one.

disable hibernation, i think it's on by default.

if you don't know if you can delete it, rename it to .bak or something. if everything is working as expected. delete it.

the pagefile is in the root of whatever partition one specifies it to be in.

winsxs is just a repository of drivers/libraries for compatibility from what i've read

I ran the disk cleanup but it got rid of minimal stuff. I feel like an idiot now because I never noticed the more options tab. Well I clicked that and I never knew I could clean up the restore points/shadow copies. Well I did that now I'm back to 22.4gb. I feel like a fucking retard. I still don't know what a shadow copy is thought.

How would I go about resizing shadow copies?

shadow copy makes a backup copy of whatever file/folder justin case if you delete it or alter it and want to go back to original.
